Question on hooking up a Ferguson to an Analogue TV and existing

I asked the following in the Ferguson PVR thread but didn't get much joy.

Just about to hook it up but I have an existing Analogue Television and a HDD Recorder that was used for recording from Analogue. Up to this I just took it for granted that the HDD recorder would be obselete but just want a few things cleared up.

The Analogue TV has 2 SCART connections (I'll call them SCART 1 and 2) and a coax connection.

HDD Recorder has 2 SCARTs (I'll call them SCART 3 and 4), HDMI connection, coax and Digital inputs as well as what they call a DV3 connection. It's a Philips DVDR5570H.

My idea is that Satellite would connect to LINE IN on Ferguson and then LINE OUT would go to HDD recorder. Then SCART on Ferguson would connect to television say SCART1 and SCART 2 and 3 would also be connected.

Anyone have any ideas if this will work or will I just have to with my original idea and discard the existing HDD recorder.

Further to this I've hooked this up connecting SCART from PVR to HDD Recorder and then the second SCART from the HDD recorder to the TV but no joy. Searching for Digital channels on DVD Decorder also finds nothing

Is there a difference between Analogue and Digital that I can only see the channel that the PVR is on or is decoding.

I see that the DVD Recorder supports DVB-T so I thought it would be fine. What would it need to support for it to be able to work?

Could HDMI work in parallel with SCART or is it really a choice of one or the other? Is HDMI Digital while SCART is Analogue.

I'm getting to the stage where I'll buy that seperate hard drive but if anyone can clear this up I'd be interested.

Have you tried connecting the Ariva to SCART 2 (video in) of the Philips DVDR & looping to the tv via SCART 1?

Can you then record as an auxiliary input?

The tuner in the DVDR is likely to be MPEG2 only so no use for Saorview.

My idea is that Satellite would connect to LINE IN on Ferguson and then LINE OUT would go to HDD recorder.

Do you mean lnb in & out? The DVDR can't do anything with the satellite signal.
Then SCART on Ferguson would connect to television say SCART1 and SCART 2 and 3 would also be connected.

Might be some point if you can route the AV1 input back out through the tv's AV2 SCART to the DVDR's video-in SCART. Certainly some tvs allow a choice between the tv's own tuner & AV1 input on the video out of AV2.

Some describe their AV2 output as "monitor". Presumably this means they output whatever is displaying at the time? (As opposed to "tv" on AV1 which would be the tuner.)

Edit: That's what it means alright (I don't think I've used SCART in this manner, certainly not recently). The input to the DVDR would be composite-only though, using this method. Connecting directly from Ariva to Philips would allow the RGB signal to pass (& on to the tv).

link to the user manual pictures on how to connect included,

The manual doesn't actually deal with the specific instance of an external receiver with only 1 SCART output, like the Ariva.

That's not to say it's hard to figure out what to do with it.

Hooked up exactly as per page 21 with link from "ANT IN" linked to coax on TV and comments from Ronnie_Raygun but when recorder is on don't see any channels.

When this recorder is off I see the Saorview channels no problem. Tried doing search on analogue and digital channels on recorder but nothing comes up.

I saw previously that the recorder only only does MPEG2 so that's why I suppose it doesn't record. Is MPEG4 what is required to do this?

I've alst tried hooking SCART from Ariva to TV and then SCART2 from TV back to recorder but that also made no difference.

TV is Sanyo 25DN8 but I'd say it's dead old so it'll only do the basics.

I suppose if I only see channels on Ariva when recorder is powered off I'm banjaxed so I'll have to look at purchasing a seperate hard drive.

Can you select an "EXT 2" channel on the recorder which will cause the input of the Ariva to be displayed on the tv?

I played around with it a bit more. I have it set as "EXT 2" on the recorder and I can see the picture on both the recorder and the TV.

I can also record now but I can't set up any timers to record a particular channel at a particular time.

I suppose this just a limitation that is there.

Unless you have any other inputs I think my only option is to but a USB hard disk.

By the way I already have a USB hard disk with other recordings on it. Is it possible to just put this in the Ariva or does this have to be re-formatted?

For safety I'll probably just but a seperate hard disk but I'd like to know my options.

    Appreciate all the inputs.

Very disappointing that Phillips didnt decide to enable reception of MPEG4 H264 DVB-T broadcasts especially given it probably has the onboard chip to help process the signal as it decodes Divx i.e. MPEG4 ASP. Thats the thing though - massive difference between chips that do ASP and those that do H264. I say its disappointing given that these DVDR5570H (in their tellies the H denotes H264 tuner - obviously not their DVDPVRs) were released for the tail end of the UK Freeview SD market in 2009. Nobody uses MPEG2 except mainly the UK for Standard definition broadcasts. Even France Phillips main stomping ground are using MPEG4 H264 for SD and HD.

Anyhow yes it has an board DVB-T tuner but it will be useless in Ireland. You should consider selling it as analogue will be gone in October so no tuners and hence a useless PVR facility!

What you are doing by the way scarting to this is converting digital to analogue. You would only be ever be able to record what you are watching on the Ferguson.

Get a USB drive, they are €50 these days.

I'll have to look into the seperate USB drive it looks like.

I'm happy recording and watching recorded stuff while it is doing this but the missus wants to watch live TV while this is happening so I'll have to buy this USB as well.

The places in Cork I looked only seem to have 1 TB and 200GB drives that are externally powered. The 200GB is too small and I read somewhere that there was a 750 GB limit but I think anyhow I'll try the 1 TB and see if it works. Harvey Norman are saying I can return it if there are problems so I should be covered anyhow. Do you think the 1 TB drive will work?

Thanks for all the inputs by the way. I really appreciate it.
