Consumer camcorder for Indie Movies

With the advancements in consumer HD camcorder technology, the gap must be closing on industry standard cameras. I'm basically looking to spend €350-€400 on a HD camcorder for making film shorts. Is this workable, do budget camcorders look professional enough on the big screen? Also what would people recommend>?
