Yes I agree with both those statements. I would also add hunger and desire. I recently heard somebody say that you cant judge whether somebody will be a good hurler or footballer until your 18 or 19. Personally I definitely don't agree with this. Does anybody see sense in this statement?

A huge amount of hunger and passion for the game. Work ethic is a must. The desire to better yourself in your skill set and fitness. There are probably others but I think these would be the core ones.

In a way yes. Having seen and coached lads who were total work horses through their young teen years and then fall to the side due to drink, girls, soccer and in worse cases drugs (Breaks your fúckin heart) when they got older.

You can of course see kids and earmark them for the future, but that age bracket (18-20) will show you things too. How much of their fitness and stamina they will retain going from their teens into their 20's, how much focus and effort they will give to their club given they will also have other commitments in the form of uni, work etc.

The fulfilling of potential is a complex one.

A player must have and do the the following, skill, application, self determination, will to win, a good structure around him (both family and club), good coaching, attitude, be disciplined. I could probably add shed load more to this.

Players develop at different ages, your star player from u10 may be average by u14, your star at u14 may be average by minor etc, etc.

MDMA has publicly stated that there were 5/6 players better than him in his school alone when he was a teenager. So you see there is a lot of things that can influence potential.

there are so many things its nearly impossible to pin down, take someone like derek duggan who at 19 for roscommon was arguably best forward in ireland (certainly top 3 anyway), he had everything size (6'3), strength, speed, amazing freetaker, lightning turn of pace, this was a guy who was scoring 1-8 in an all-ireland semi final without breaking sweat and this against one of the best full backs lines in recent history (meath 1991), by 22-23 his career was pretty much over due to injury

After reading all your feedback, its obvious that there are so many minor yet big details that have to be taken into account.
I mean the tiniest of things can prove to be big. I also feel it requires playing at high, competitive level of hurling or football. I wouldn't see how playing in div 3 or 4 will do any favours for yourself. It would only encourage you to get lazy and laid back because of the level your playing at.

Ever heard of the '10,000 hour rule'.

I thought it was minutes - is where I went wrong.

What exactly is the 10000 hour rule? Is it like they reckon to be a top player you must put in over 10000 hours training?

It’s not something I really agree with. I think genetics plays a big part. But since you ask…..
The boffins looked at things like music, science, sport and the amount of time an ‘expert in their field” spent learning or developing their skill.

So somebody who was an expert had spent 10000 hours training or working on their art in their formative years. Genius level was something like 20000 hrs.
The idea was then put that anyone who prepared likewise regardless of innate talent would also reach the top. So any kid that plays twenty thousand hours of football will become maurice fitzgerald or matt connor.
