I'm thinking someone from here should be capable of winning this....

I'd be happy enough with the espresso aspect of it but my cappuccinos are rubbish and I never make filter !!!

The specialty coffee community is consistantly focused on ethics and good will and never materialism or greed. Therefore, in what is a refreshing change from the norm we’re starting with the prizes!

    1. Nuova Simonelli Musica Espresso Machine

    2. Mahlkonig Pro-M grinder

    3. Hasbean 12 week subscription

    4. Custom hand-carved 3FE Tamper

Now, those prizes are incredible and because we are restricting ourselves to 8 competitors you have a 12.5% chance of winning if you enter. All you have to do is sign up HERE and you’re away.

    Obviously we would love to have as many international competitors as possible so if you’re considering taking the trip consider that there’s also the following on at the Twisted Pepper that weekend;

    Irish Brewers Cup

    Tamper Tantrum Live

    Irish Cup Taster Competition

The event is called the WORLD home barista championships because its open to everyone so we’re looking forward to a wide range of competitiors. The idea is basically to serve 2 espresso, 2 cappuccinos and 2 filter coffees using your own home equipment and we’ll look favourably on those making the most of their equipment.

Competitors will receive a full run down of the rules but in short, here are the main ones outlined below. If you’re interested, sign up ASAP. Its going to be an amazing weekend and if you win people will like you more as you will own lots of cool stuff.

    Col

Making all 3 in 10 mins will be tricky.
    Gonna be fun though :D

    Are you going to enter?

I'm wondering if 2 espressos means like 2 doubles or pulling 2 singles from 1 double basket, if its the whole process twice it would be something like,

    1 min per espresso,

    cappuccinos

    2 min for espresso
1 min heating up to frothing temperature
    1 min frothing
1 min making the 2 drinks

    3 mins for the filter.

Yeah, I'd imagine it would be tough enough to do them all well within 10 mins.

I guess it depends on your machinery as well, are you allowed use 2 grinders for example, and can you use scales to measure out your doses?

Have a feeling you are allowed to do it the same way you would at home. So if you have 2 grinders then you can use both.

    I hope its 2 singles!

I'm not involved in judging or running this comp but I would be almost certain that 2 singles from one double basket is what is expected...

You may find good reference material in the WBC Rules & Scoresheets from the official WBC site. Please note these are NOT the R&R's for this comp!

That's really interesting, must check out a few videos to see how it works in practice, wouldn't know where to start with the signature drink.

Sig drinks are always the most challenging for any competitive barista... thankfully the Home Barista Championship only involves 2 cappuccinos, 2 espressos and 2 cups of filter coffee.

Indeed!!! Filter would be my main problem, given I've never used one :)

    Hi,

What brew method would people recommend for getting into filter coffee, I was thinking about buying a chemex.

Anyone have any opinions on this or maybe a kalita dripper?

    cheers!!

Chemex is great. The V60's or Kilita are great for convenience, easy clean up!

Hey guys, sorry just saw this thread now. Shots are indeed singles so you can yield both drinks from a double basket.

Surprisingly enough we still have 2 slots remaining for the comp if anyone is interested? There's €3k worth of prizes for the victor (winner takes all) so its defintely worth a punt. Never got anything like that for the Irish Barista Champs!!

If anyone is interested just let me know, it should be a lot of fun

Hope to see a few of you in over the weekend, Tamper Tantrum is shaping up nicely too

A quick note to wish those boards members competing the best of luck for sunday. Let us know who you are as I need to know who I should be cheering.

Oh, and if someone knows what time it starts? I met RE*AC*TOR earlier in 3FE and he thought there might be 3 or maybe even 4 regular contributors here going for the title.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 16,193 Mod ✭✭✭✭adrian522

I'll be there but "going for the title" might be a bit strong !!!

It runs from 2-6, think I'm on at 2.20.

I'll be competing too. There's some tough competition for it. No longer the coffee keeping me awake :D

    Hi Guys,

Unfortunately we've had a power outage at the twisted pepper which means that the Home Barista Championships will have to be postponed. I apologise for the short notice but we don't want to risk doing this the wrong way. The Cup Tasting comp will go on as planned.

Any expense you've incurred in coffee we are happy to help you out with.

Could you all let me know via email or at 08575****3 that you've received this message.

Again, I am very sorry about this but we feel it would be the wrong decision to attempt this with insufficient power

    Thanks,

    Col

    Hey, can you clarify please.

Is the event postponed, or was it a April fool hoax??

The event is postponed until a later date to be decided, no April fool hoax.
