TV Stands: Can't I just use a table/small stand?

I'm getting a rather large TV and it seems that the advertised TV stands for the 55" are very high and quite large. Why do I need a large stand? I'm getting a rather large TV and it seems that the advertised TV stands for the 55" are very high and quite large.

Why do I need a large stand? If the TV itself [a slim LED] balances fine on a smaller base why can't I use a smaller stand or even a little table? What advantage are these rather hefty stands offering for a TV that would weigh around the 25kg mark. Surely the only thing that matters is the base fits on the surface of whatever I choose and the weight is supported.
