STI test questions

    Hey there lads and lasses

I know it's bad at 23 to have never gone for a test but I lived in ignorance of STI's till recently. No excuses I know but I'm going for a test tomorrow.

Fairly sure I have nothing like but, what sort of questions does the Doc ask? I'm more nerve wracked at that over anything else!

Any advice would be great thanks.

They will ask questions about your health and and any potential risks e.g. when you had sex, what type of sex, if you used a condom

Honestly the GMHS people are always friendly and helpful

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Since it's your first time you'll register your details in the office, then see a counselor, then the doctor. The counselor will explain it all, give you any leaflets you need, check you're not worried, etc.. The doctor will ask about your sexual history, when, how, what, who, how often, etc..

Also turn up as early as you can.

If you are going to get tested in Galway, it's more or less the same. Although when I was tested 2 weeks ago (it was my first time too) they asked on arrival if it was your first time.

Then went to see a nurse who asked about the sexual activities I was mopst recently involved in. She was quite abrubt to be honest and rather snappy when I asked her to clarify some of the language she was using, as there were a number of sweeping questions which I was unsure of how to answer accurately. Didn't endeer her to me I must say.

When I was shown through to the doctor he couldn't have been nicer very friendly (in a professional way of course) and simly matter of fact about the whole thing. Made me feel far more at ease.

I guess what I'm trying to get across is be prepared for very indepth questions which in my innocence I was not.

'If a junkie stabs you with a syringe you've a 1 in 50 chance of getting Hepatitis'
    'I don't live near a drug den?'
'1 in 300 chance of getting HIV'
'can I've my test results now.....'

    Not particularly helpful advice

    Hey,

I got tested in Cork last year. It was after a simple first time thing and my 'hypochondricness' drove me there.

I found that they were very professional, especially the nurse who took my blood. Like someone above said, the woman taking details can be quite abrupt. She took me aback with the question: 'Are you straight?'.... would have expected 'heterosexual' to be the term used but anyway..... just a bit weird

Why they ask specific questions about a person's sexual orientation is beyond me. Do they really need to know that?

They need to know the likely transmission route if you're infected with HIV, that'd be the reason for that question and ones about IV drug use etc.

Not as likely to be asked it if going privately to a GP, though.
