apparently fasting is actually good for the body, but what does Christian fasting entail? A friend only eats brown bread without butter and drinks tea, I think without milk, in the evenings.

Does anone know teh significance of DE Ceadaoin (first fasting day)
    Deardaoin
    DE hAoine (last fasting day)
and until when were they used?

were these also days where meat was not consumed? meat every day is not healthy

I have given up the gargle for teh lent and though I will go back on it I feel good.

it would appear that fasting is no longer en vogue in Ireland.

As far as I'm aware on ash wednesday and good Friday, they are days of fasting and abstanence, meaning no meat and you can have two small meals and one normal meal for dinner (the two small meals cannot be bigger than the normal meal if put together). On every other Friday in lent you should abstain from meat finishing on Easter Sunday.Hope this helps

In addition to above post, you can deny yourself some form of pleasure for the duration of Lent, many people opt to give up alcohol, sweet things etc. :)
