Well done Rory. Super round today to become the new number one. He's playing well and fully deserves to be up there on top.

well done rory was always going to happen just a question of when.

Question do you have to win a tournement to claim number 1 as all this week and last week it was if rory wins or if lee wins.

At present, that's the case between those two and Donald.

Not entirely sure on the circumstances entirely, but a win for Donald or Westwood next week means they'll be the new World No.1

was just thinking rory went into last weeks matchplay and a win would of got him no1, he finished second so i would of taught he earned so many points from that that maybe a top ten would have been enough this week but again he had to win to be no1.

he had to win today as there was less ranking points on offer as lee westwood was not playing this weekend.

he would have become number 1 eventually if he kept finishing in the top 10.

Jeez, what took him so long :P

All joking aside, he really could win any tournament including the majors so you'd have to wonder could he do a Tiger on it and keep it for years?

ya great for Rory... but after it all died down went to see how Paddy got on.... jeez +9... would really love to see him put 4 good rounds down

Those yanky commentators were really gettin on my nerves after tiger went in the clubhouse, every shot rory hit they were trying to make out he might lose it here, then here, maybe now here too since his last 2 iron shots were bad, really bad form tbh. Rorys the man, his last 11 events speak for themselevs!

  • Subscribers Posts: 4,419 ✭✭✭PhilipMarlowe

I thought Miller was way over the top with those comments (about bad iron play). I remember on commentary a good few years ago @ pebble (when I used to watch some TV golf), him saying that you'd aim at the bunker (right) and if you pull it (onto the green) you're a hero. Now, I know he was talking about a 2nd shot into a par 5 versus Rory hitting tee shots to par 3s last night but in my mind the principle was the same. I mean his bunker shot on 17 was pretty simple for a player of his standard. He effectively ruled out anything worse than a bogey and going in the water would have meant a struggle for bogey and a likely double. I thought it was just sensible course management to hit safe, conservative irons to the left side while protecting his lead.

Miller has always been a fool when it comes to European players. Nothing new.

Well, in fairness he was facing the "Bear trap" which is a pretty difficult three holes and if he puts one ball in the water the whole picture changes!
The US commentary was a biased one but they had just witnessed the Great One post a 62 which was his lowest final round post on Tour. The TV executives must have been praying for the double bogey that takes it to a play off!

I agree with what PhillipMarlowe is saying. He had the lead and he was taking out double bogey from the hole by playing it in the manner that he did. It would have been interesting had he bogeyed 15 or 16 and had to get Par on 17 and 18.. But it looked like he was well able for the pressure and converted all shots with a touch of swagger. It did look a little weird though because Woods just doesnt do conservative shots.. Well not to the extent that McIlroy did last night anyway!
I think that we are gonna have a huge Masters now with the top three in the world all comfortable with the way they are playing and adding an improving Tiger to the mix.... Would not be surprised to see this four in the top 5 in a couple of weeks time..

They said Rory was hitting the ball badly and in general he was. They said he was perhaps falling apart and they missed the point completely here. He was holding it together better than almost anyone out there...

It's a testament to McIlroy that he can hit the ball pretty badly by his standards and still win by 2 strokes...

Great maturity from McIlroy to close out the win. Delighted for the bloke.

His consistency, as has been pointed out earlier in this thread, has been awesome.

But based on Tiger's last round. He's starting to look like 'old tiger' a bit... should be exciting if he follows on this form to give the European dominance of the World no.1 a challenge

I think this is key and was the most impressive part of his win.

The real difference between Tiger and other golfers over the last decade was that he was the only one who could not play great and still win. Hopefully Rory also has this asset.

Hitting it long on those two par threes was smart play in my books. He figured he'd get up and down on at least one. I'd say going into the Bear Trap, he'd have taken +1 for those 3 holes if it had been offered to him. A one shot lead with a par 5 to finish, victory virtually sealed.

He wasn't which is even better for him! Donald needed to finish among the top eight this weekend to stay at number 1 but failed.
