I've a handful of folders on my C: drive. They're named 5234eb689437a86636a98e and such. Is it safe to delete these? They appear to be bits of installation stuff or programmes. I don't have display hidden files on.

Another is ff8e5e29f57fbd6b8b98ff6fe1c53fd6 and has amd 64 and i386 folders within, but it says 'access denied' when I try to look inside.

Also, having trouble deleting a printer from the Control Panel/Printer & Faxes. It's greyed out (been like that for weeks). Running XP Pro SP3.

Be sure to check display hidden files and folders.

They could just be temp folders for installation of updates\other programs.

I'd recommend downloading and running ccleaner and it might get rid of them for you.

As far as deleting the printer what does it say when you try to delete it?

I've had CCleaner on the go for a few years, may not have all the options selected, but I'll check. Also have Malwarebytes.

I don't think anything happens when I try to delete the printer, it just stays there. Trouble is, it's an old version of one that's currently connected and operating on the PC. Had trouble with it a while ago. So, the one that won't delete is something like 'HP 5600', the one that's working is 'HP 5600 series'. Earlier Windows seemed to want to default the deleted one, again this is something I'll have to check out further.

In the printers folder if you select View - Details what comes up as its status? You could try restarting the spooler service and deleting again. (Command prompt 'net stop spooler' enter, then 'net start spooler' enter).

Leftovers from Windows updates, usually safe to delete. To be sure to be sure, create a temp folder, and move all these folder into the newly created folder, then run the sytem for a while and if all is well, you can dump the lot.

Anti Virus programs such as AVG usually create folder with strange names like that, actually, Microsoft Security Essentials does too I think?
