Question about .17 rifles

my dad has a .17 Rem, used for foxes mostly,
the ammo is 40 euro a box of 20 so he does not shoot much, most foxes would be shot under 200m at night.
He is thinking about gettign a .17hmr as the ammo is 20 euro for 50,
he would sell his Remi and would feel better about takeing 20 shots in a day at mags grays ect.
he only has fired about 300 shots out of the .17 Remi since he got it 2 years ago, it hardly leaves the house,.22 hornets, magnims, and other rifles he had before never left his side when he was out and about.

the question is would the .17Hmr do what he needs nothing over 200m mags grays foxes?

Your gonna get mixed reviews here but imo and experience of the hmr yes it will do what your asking. Would he not consider a 223? Ammo can be got cheap enough compared to other centrefires

i have a .223 he is licenced to use but we both want it at the same times 80% of the time
and i dont know why he loves the .17 i did explane that the 223 with a light grain shot is dam close to the .17rem

Ah i see. The hmr is up to foxes with good shot placement to about 200. It'll kill bunnies and mags as far as you can shoot them and its a very accurate round even at longer range.

I got rid of mine for a 223 because i was getting more into foxing so wanted a dedicated foxing rig which the hmr is not, its up to the job but ya sometimes have to pick your shots if ya know what i mean. Great round tho

Ah good stuff thanks for the info,
Dad is a remington fanboy but i just seen that they are doing a recall on the 597 17hmr due to suffering from a blown-out action, e.g. Charging Handle and Mag forcably ejected due to gas pressure.
i guess he will have to wait or change.

I heard that too about the semi autos.

I had a marlin 917v and it was very accurate and didnt break the bank

.17 remington is a top class fox round but very pricey for crows and the like. If you want a rifle for 200 yard+ crows and bunnies for charlie 150 the hmr is perfect but youneed to know where your putting it, but for a dedicated fox rifle you WON'T beat a .223. Simple as. Sort you preferences out and you'll be ok. If you want a fox only gun look at a hornet, but I still think a .223 is the best all rounder

Im lucky enough to have a sako 223 and .17 hmr i love my 17 take it every where and have shot a few foxes but given a choice for foxes it the 223 she packs the punch buy maybe you should look into the new 17 hornet reads well not sure if its for sale yet but this is worth looking at 20 grain with serious velocity

i guess the next question is how much would he get for his .17 Remington it is spotless
    no optics
looks just like this no mods maybe 300 rounds fired.

Nothing at all wrong with 223 great round but the 22-250 and swift is 30% greater in fps and ftlbs so it will beat 223 hands down

Yeah no doubt they are 2 crackin rounds but both are pricey to shoot which is the problem he is having now with the 17 rem. 223 can be shot cheap if tou want to

I tought the question here was coming down in bullet size to cut cost the 22-250 and swift wont achieve that i was talking about the new .17 hornet when i said it has a high velocity not the 223 the reason most people went down to the 223 was bullet price .

True. I was spending 32euro on box for swift and my brother is loading his for 24euro a box so you be right about that. 40 a box is crazy for 17rem rounds. Them dealers need cop on. Some wanted 42euro a box for swift i wasn't going to pay that. I think 22-250 rounds are cheap enough 28euro a box. These are Horandy rounds and that all we use.

Reckon it'll be a long time before it reaches us here! Plenty of choice here for him already

Its the business. Savage is making rifles for it. You wouldn't beat the .17 hornet with a big stick

The price is one of the reasons people buy 223s.;) They have more than enough power to knock foxes and a great selection of ammo. Easy on barrels aswell.;)

    Keep the rifle !!!!

Just rebarrel it to .223, 22 hornet, .17 fireball or many more options...

same rifle he loves just change the barrel.

Border barrels archer barrel is a good bur not too expensive option :

    ARCHER BARREL

and have a chat with a gun smith, I deal with Ireland custom rifles and find Fergal spot on, he'll talk straight.

    Fish

A box of 20 rounds for a 22/250 is 25 Euro. That doesnt break the bank. I agree on the 17 Remmie ammo. I had one 10 or 12 years ago. Packed it in when ammo went to 27 quid a box.

I know yeah similar price as premium 223 stuff but like i said you can get cheap ammo for the 223 from 10 quid a box and hornady 55gr soft points €40 for 50 so its cheaper to shoot if you choose to do so. My mate finds it hard to source the ammo he wants for his 22-250, he ether has to travell or get it ordered. Great round tho

If I were you I would hold onto the .17rem your going t have to sell it for half nothing in order to shift it and its a great foxing round! Keep it and buy a second hand .17hmr set up (sak mod and hawlk scope would be grand on it) Bring that with you during the day and it should take care of mags crowes etc.! then when your going foxing bring the 2 rifles use the hmr for the near foxes and th .17 for the farther away ones! I really like the hmr but I wouldnt like to be depending on it ie. if you had a problem fox to shoot and it was blowing a gale!
