Damaged Charger Port

My daughter got hold of my HTC Desire HD while it was charging and was pulling at the phone, stretching the charger cable and probably bending the connections. The phone now will not take much charge and the red light keeps going off. I was getting a message saying the phone was using more charge than it was getting while charging.
Is there anything that can be done, does it sound like the charger or the phone itself. I am not due for an upgrade till next February as I am on a 2 year contract and I would say my warranty is gone after 1 year even if it would cater for damage by children.

I had the exact same problem recently, and a new motherboard to fix the problem is around 200 quid! I bought a second battery, and one of these:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004GU5V36/ref=s9_simh_gw_p23_d5_g23_i4?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-4&pf_rd_r=0TSSNK9XTKZCNSC0S58H&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=467128133&pf_rd_i=468294

It's not ideal having to switch the battery when it dies, but i'm not paying htc to fix it when the One x should be out soon.
Let us know if you find a better solution though!

Try a new charger first. I thought i'd damaged the connecter on my phone but i tried a new charger (€4 generic one from tesco) and it works fine.

Try and look into the charging port and see if the little metal connector in the middle is bent up or down or touching the top or bottom of the port. If it is, insert the charger and GENTLY try and bend it back that it's in the middle. This is a problem that happens regularly with the Galaxy S2 and the original Desire, not sure about the Desire HD

If you have a usb lead you could plug it into a pc and if it charges and connects properly
then you can assume that the connection on the phone is fine.

    Specs:

If you do need to replace the charger I think it's a microUSB v2.0 lead that you need.
You can buy them in Tescos for €15 and it comes with 10 various connectors for
    other mobiles too.

Worst case scenario you could maybe pick up another desire with a broken screen from ebay and use that to charge the battery?

I got a cheap usb lead on ebay to check if that was the problem, it charges perfectly off my computer now. Problem hopefully solved.
    Thanks.
