the tyres on my bike seem to be the tubeless variety .. (trek 2.1 700 * 23)

can i stick a tube in them if i get a puncture or do i need to replace the whole tyre

Are you sure? Did you buy the bike new? What tyres are they (stock bontragers or other)?

i stand corrected . what led me to think they were tubless was the valve stem , its fully threaded down to the rim. it looked just like a pic of a valve i saw somewhere for a tubless tyre .

    thanks
