    Hi
Looking for a cheap(>€1200), small displacement diesel for the summer that I can run on biodiesel (need to make savings everywhere!)

Need small engine (>1.7) for lower tax/insurance. Is it correct that you can't tax a car-van as commercial anymore? i.e. taxing a 2L for €288

So for less than a ton, I've found the mk1 astra 1.7 and 318tds.

Which is the best option, or any other suggestions?

You can still tax a van as a commercial if you are a commercial user.

With vehicles of the age your looking at, its more down the the condition of the individual cars. i.e when new, the BM would have been seen as a better car then the astra...but now, after maybe 15 years or more, saying here which one would be best to buy is impossible.

How using biodiesel is any cheaper (than regular Diesel fuel)? After you add all taxes, it acually is more expensive than fossil fuels.

Anyway, I wouldn't buy the BMW to run it on biodiesel, as it is not as suitable, i.e. other cars would do that job better with less problems.

Are you talking about running Vegetable Oil or Biodiesel? If its vegetable oil, then you need something with a Bosch injector pump and preferably with mechanical control. If is biodiesel, then anything should run on it.

I can get biodiesel in Crossmaglen for €1.14/L.

Anyone else get biodiesel here while I ask?

Are you sure it is biodiesel and not PPO?

I'm not sure, its advertised as certified biodiesel

You have a much better chance of getting a 1.9tdi of that age. Granted the tax is more expensive, but it will massively open up your options for a cheap vehicle. Most of these use bosch injector pumps also, and there is a decent amount of information on the web about converting the 1.9tdi to use biofuel/veg oil.
