ok i was cycling home today,

and notice my gears where starting to hop on the Cassette.. so when i stop at a traffic light, i still had my gears up high when i took off one of the links break off the bike..

is it safe to get a new link where the old one broke and place it back on the bike, or would it be that the stretch has being to much for the chain?

i have no equipment to place the chain back on, does any one know how much would it cost to get it place back on with new link ?

    get a new chain.
get yourself a chain tool, learn to fix/change a chain and carry it with you.You may need it once in your cycling life but that once will be the difference between cylcing home or walking in cleats etc

If you've had the chain on the bike for over a thousand kilometres, or if it's been let get rusty, just change it.

I do carry a chain tool (it's part of a multitool), but I've only used it a handful of times, and since I started proper maintenance I've never had to use it.

You might find that the chain skips when you put on a new chain, in which case you might need to change the rear cassette as well (and even maybe the chain rings).

The chain is like new.. i clean the bike after every ride.. and oil it every time, so it should be ok.

What kind of chain is it?

If it's still OK your LBS should be able to re-fit it for no more than 10 eurons either using a power/quick (what ever you want to call them your self) link or a decent chain tool that will deform the pin after re-fitting.

But chains usually break for a good reason either they are worn out, have become dry and un-lubed or are just a bad chain to begin with!

    the chain was a shimano...

I think it was cos i put to much tension down from a stop start,, had it in a to high gear from a starting point,,

plus i went up Strawberry Hill in a very high gear jump down to stop me from falling off the bike and since that point the

chain start hopping back and fort.

How old is the chain? Even well looked-after chains wear out eventually.

If you want to check wear, a ruler will do:

    (See "Measuring Chain Wear")

Since it's a Shimano, it may be a Hyper Glide chain. If so, the person who installed it may have neglected to use the special rivet that HG chains need, which would mean the chain would be prone to breaking. However, that seems unlikely if a bike shop installed the chain.

You may have one of the faulty shimano chains that were doing the rounds.
There were a fault with the manufacturing process and were failing under little or no pressure regardless of mileage.
