Sump guard: how much?

Mrs called me and has said 'something' had just fallen off the car (and then she rolled over it). Insisted it just spontaneously fell off and she didn't go over anything.

Anyway, it's the sump guard. And it looks pretty busted. Have done a good bit of looking under the car and sump itself looks fine and it's not losing oil.

Anyone know approximately how much a new sump guard is gonna cost me? (skoda superb 2005).

    Thanks guys.

Go to a breakers for one or don't bother with it would be my suggestion

    Mmmm.

That's a good point. I'll take a look tomorrow but I would've thought there would be damage to the supporting joints if it got ripped off which might be beyond me to repair.

By sump Guard I assume you mean the plastic undercovers, my Toyota cost €400 to have them replaces 2. High curbs cause them to rip out of the fixings

Holy cow. Was quoted between 170 and 240 at a number of dealers around Dublin for the part and fitting.

This is it I think http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gearbox-undertray-cover-VW-Passat-B5-97-05-Skoda-Superb-Audi-A4-/260967867354?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cc2e5a3da#ht_1353wt_1396

That is complete madness. I don't blame the dealer per se. They have to use Original parts but that's madness for a piece of plastic.

    Do I really need this?

If that is the piece, buy it and install it yourself, it's pribably(hopefully) just a few bolts. You know if it fell off once and if she does it again, there is nothing to guard the sump anymore, right? I think 30 quid (50euro after all the in between stuff) is cheaper than losing the sump next time it happens.

    I'd be tempted.

I don't mind paying for expertise.

I do mind being raped sideways for a piece of plastic that costs a fortune cos the manufacturer has branded it.

It is debatable whether they actually protect the sump or not. A piece of plastic will not stop a large stone.

I thought they were primarily for aerodynamics? I wouldn't condsider a piece of plastic a sump gaurd really.

    Not a bit...
I drove my passat round for years without it....

Its not just protecting the sump though, it would also be protecting the alternator and starter from getting wet which could cause a premature failure. I'd get a second hand one from a scrap yard for it and put it on

Older cars never had them and did not have problems, I think it is to help the air flow and thus more MPG.
To fit Them without a car lift may be a problem, mine goes up each side of the engine and gearbox.

Can anyone recommend a good independent garage in Dublin that would be able to source a suitable third party part and fit it?

The link you provided above has it priced at £30, plus £7.50 postage to Ireland. Thats less than €45. You wont get it cheaper here second hand.

Best thing is to buy that one, when it comes see if you can get it on yourself or with a mate, if noy take it to a garage. from the link it looks like a few bolts, quick and easy job.
