similar to Killarney National Park in Mallow

I don't know Mallow or the surroundings all that well. I was recently asked to house-share with someone in this area. Neither of us would be well familiar with Mallow and we're just looking in to the situation at the moment and I could even turn in to a regular in this forum here too :eek:

but can anyone tell me:

If you are familiar with the Killarney National Park:

Is their anything even remotey similar in or near the Mallow area? Similar in terms of hikes; jogging & walking tracks and trails? I know that Killarney won't be beaten for the scenery but where would the Mallow equivalent be or where do most people do their outdoor jogging & hikes?

I will miss Killarney National Park and surrounding town views but if circumstances allow; then I'll enjoy this change hugely!



Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated by me

Also Millstreet Country Park but its a bit of a drive away and only open seasonally.

You also have the Naggle Mountains and Ballyhouras fairly near to Mallow.

Both are good

Millstreet Country Park is not bad but Doneraile is closer and just as good, and Killarney is somewhat farther but much nicer.

Been there once.

Comparing doneraile park to killarney equates to out-of-date lidl fish fingers to freshly caught wild salmon.
It is little more than a commercial deer farm , wire fences everywhere and 1 loop walk of approx 3.5 miles.
House closed to public all year with boarded up windows. Hardly scenic!
There are some good trees though , not in the same universe as killarney.

It isn't in the same league, but that doesn't stop it being a nice walk. Been meaning to get back there for ages.

Jogging and walking tracks in Mallow town would be in and around the town park, by the Blackwater - there is a loop that you can do around the GAA pitch by the river Blackwater. There is a decent running track around the GAA complex in Carrigoon, but nothing like Killarney National Park.

Doneraile is nice, decent track around there. Ballyhoura has some walking trails as well, http://www.ballyhouracountry.com. Doneraile is about 20/25 minutes to get to from Mallow town, Ballyhoura about the same.

Kanturk also has a park, not great, but could be somewhere else to go for a jog/run. Hike you would really be looking at Ballyhoura or Mount Hillary in Banteer http://www.discoverireland.ie/Activities-Adventure/mount-hillary-loop/74266

If there is more coming to Mallow, we might have to organise a boardsie meet up in Mallow! :P

Provided they have the required entry visas into Mallow - which we can happily supply at a reasonable rate
