A complicated Question

    Hi all,
I have a rather complicated question (for me at least)
Im renting a house with the past few years and the previous tenant left a satelite dish on the side of the house, there is some sort of connection in the wall in my living room which I dont recognise (two cables coming out a few inches out of the wall), but obviously whatever skybox/freeview box the tenant had went with them.
I just bought, the other day, a new HDTV with a built in digital tuner and Im receiving the 6 Irish digital channels now.
So my knowledge of tvs and satelite dishes etc is extremely limited and Im wondering is it possible to use the satelite dish on the side of the house to pick up free view? Is this possible using the built in digital tuner? If so how do I connect to my tv?

Get yourself a Freesat PVR HD box and get it connected to the cables and you will get all UK channels for free. See other threads for detailed advice.

    1. Yes
2, No (unless your tv has built in FreeSAT)
    3, Via set top box.

It sounds like you have 2 cables coming from your LNB and exiting in the living room:

You have 3 choices for Free Satellite TV:

    1. Generic Free To Air, either SD or HD:
Obviously SD would be cheaper and i have seen these boxes going in the likes of Powercity for as little as 40euro for SD. A HD box can be had for around 70+ Euro in various places including online. You will only be using one of the connections from the satellite box so you wont be able to record one station and watch another.

    Example:
    HD: http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-24-WP75HD&pages=1&prod=WP75HD&brands=WALKER&image=

    SD: http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-24-560009&pages=1&prod=560009&brands=COMMTEL&image=

Some HD boxes including the one above allow recording if you plug in a USB Hard Drive or pen drive.

    2. A Freesat HD BOX:
Much handier as it provides a similar experience to using a sky box - Full seven day guide, set reminders etc. Plus Interactive Red Button Teletext. Depending on which one you buy some have other features such as USB recording or Media Playback:

    Freesat HD: http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-24-DS186&pages=1&prod=DS186&brands=SAGEM&image=

    3. Freesat HD+

By Far the most user friendly and functional option: Also More expensive but worth it! You can watch one station and record another - both connections will be used for this one: you can also pause, rewind and fast forward Live TV. In essence it gives you the same functionality as Sky Plus -

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Humax-500GB-Satellite-Receiver-Recorder/dp/B0039J42LM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1330798860&sr=8-2

Regardless which option you go for you will get over 130 TV stations at no monthly charge - only the initial expense of buying your box.

Just to clarify in case you buy the wrong box, FREEVIEW is a UK terrestrial service via an aerial and only available near the border or parts of the east coast. FREESAT and Free To Air (FTA) are available by satellite dish and box.
