We're on our way out shortly to have a look over a 2005 1.8 CLK Kompressor with 73k miles on it. Pictures make it look to be in top nick. Anyone have any pointers on what to look out for? Asking is 8k, what would be a good starting point?

Whats real world performance of that engine like? Online reviews seem to be positive.

    Thanks lads

Check the usual, especially the electrics, try every button several times.

i had only older version clk200 and it was lovely car!

make sure Cat is in good nick as those come only from dealer. price is fantastic...

check all electrics work. give it a good run from zero. some things can be seen only if at push ( air flow meter was **** in my one, only figured it out in painfull way )

Yeh don't buy a manual and te only engines to go for are the 200k and the 320 or above the 240 isn't worth the expense!

Why so opposed to the manual? The car we looked at was in good nick. Want to have a better look at it during week, hope to deal next weekend

How would I check the condition of the cat? Audibly, or sluggish performance?

Some cars just really shouldnt be even offered as manual.

MB, BMW & Jaguar come to mind among others.

Mainly MB they would be known for rubbish manual box implantation the five speed auto in the clk was a smooth excellent box for wafting in your merc!
Jaguar I think only the x and s diesel were available with the manual but most went auto I'd say it's more of a character thing you don't buy a jag to save money!

First thing to check - noise, is there any metal banging or just louder exhaust then expected. Chec any holes etc too. General performance would be a sign aswel as blocked cat can really make a difference. If you can ask seller about cat and even better check last ncts papers. If the markets are way too close to failing then it might be a sign too.
