The 1.6 is a little underpowered in that model Avensis. If you can find a 1.8 then it will be better for overtaking, etc and fuel economy is in or around the same. Most 1.8 models also tend to be higher spec Luna models. Just be careful, the early VVTi engines we known to burn excessive oil and alot of them needed the heads replaced. Also make sure that there is no issues from the gearbox, they have been known for a bearing to go in the gearbox. Other than that they are a good daily work horse.

Might be worth having a look at the Mazda 6 also, they tend to be cheaper to buy than the Avensis and they are very good to drive and petrol models are uber reliable.

They're a good soild car, only things that have gone wrong in mine have been coil packs (4 on these one per each cylinder) easily fixed and cost €50 for one, headlight bulbs regulary blow, headlight bulb holders melt and need to replaced with a new headlamp, they can be heavy on oil, also make sure the oil strainer gauze in the sump has been repalced its a known problem if these get blocked then it will seize the engine.

Other than the problems i cant fault my one a 03 1.8 new model, currently got 378K miles on it.

Around 38 is what Toyota said. I've had the 1.6 one, it wasn't too bad but felt a bit weak when overtaking with a few people inside. Also, the 1.6 is less economical than the 1.8 one.
