    hi guys
just got delivery of a brand new macbook pro with 4gigs of ram

i mainly use chrome, and it appears so responding at times.

im running the latest OS with version 10.7.3.

is 4gb's just not enough, should i upgrade to 8 gigs?

i tried using other browsers, but it didnt make any difference

otherwise i am happy with the machine in every way.

have had a macbook which ran lion, i upgraded with 4gigs of ram, and that machine appeared faster than this new one!

    any help would be great

    thanks
    ed

    4GB should be enough.

As for the slowness, is Spotlight indexing? Have you installed anything since getting it? When you say it's slow, do you mean the system itself is unresponsive or is it just the web?

Run Activity Monitor and see what is running at the highest CPU.

How fast is your hard drive? From experience, 5400rpm will make things feel slow

i have the lower spec macbook pro, it not the internet that's slow its the computer.

im using FF now instead of chrome, we see if that makes a difference

although chrome takes way less ram, thats strange.

thinking of upgrading to the 8 gb ram though...

If it's the computer that's slow using a different browser or upgrading the RAM won't make any difference. There's most likely something eating up the CPU.

If it's brand new, maybe spotlight is indexing the HDD, or your doing a backup (time machine).

That's usually what makes mine seem slow.

    What is slow exactly? browsing?

If you're coming from a PC background everything might feel a bit "slow"

I've yet to use a mac of any sort that didn't feel "sluggish" compared to "pc's"

I use Chrome both at home on Mac and in Work on PC

Its always slow....keeps spinning to connect to a page.

Wow, you must be using some weird Macs.

I get a slowdown on my macbook using Firefox/Thunderbird - try to use Safari instead as its native, quicker and you get to use all the fancy touchpad swipes

Why not call up Apple helpline about it ?
There might be something wrong. My 2009 macbook pro flies along running OSx and WinNT at the same time

I'm not getting into this when it's not going to be a technical discussion but a load of fan boys talking rubbish.

I have absoloutley nothing in particular against mac's or anything else.

I can't tell you why it's been the case but in general mac's of a similar spec to me have been sluggish, i never got a stop watch out and timed it. maybe it just "feels" slower.

I'm comparing it to any intel based device that was running anything besides mac os. be it ubuntu/FreeBSD with X/windows etc

if you're going to rabbit back with some fan boy bollox please don't.

I'm not being smart when I say this but I reckon the reason you feel macs are sluggish is because of the default mouse / trackpad speed is much slower than that of a pc.

My last attempt to help was deleted however I will have another go.

Is this an Internet only issue? If it is, is it browser, network, time of day, location specific? Try to narrow down the problem.

    You say
it not the internet that's slow its the computer
    How have you deduced this?

Open up activity monitor (Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor) and then first sort by CPU usage descending and take a screen shot. Then sort by RAM usage descending and take screen shot and post both up.

Have you installed Rapport? If so remove it - I've had nothing but problems with it.

I also second disabling Spotlight - I had loads of problems with this when I first got my 27" imac...

You could also try repairing permissions - this seems to fix some problems.

    Best of luck
