Large Stamp Collection

    Hi there,

I recently came into my grandfathers stamp collection. 1000s of old stamps from all around the world and a large number of filled books.
Now I to be honest dont have a clue about any of these things, nor have I the time to get into such a hobby. I really hate to throw them out but I have no place to store these and I fear they will get damaged if I hold on to them.

To be honest, up until now it is the first I had heard of ANYONE holding stamps but I recon there could be a bit of money in what he has accumalated.

Is there a place I can go to sell these? Or value these? Or do SOMETHING with these? I am literally CLUELESS and wouldnt even know where to bring them.
They are all in fantastic shape as he has them all covered in plastic and the books really are in fantastic shape conidering they are the best part of 70 -100 years old? Maybe more?

Any advice appreciated and thanks if advance! :)

Some pics would be of help? If there's anything of value you could consider putting them in an auction. Whytes of Molesworth Street, Dublin http://www.whytes.ie/ would be a good place to start as they have a sale in April which might be suitable. However, without some idea of what you have, it's difficult to give you any advice. You could also try checking ebay to find similar stamps. Stamp catalogues will only serve to confuse as you really need to see what prices they are fetching as to what they might be expected to fetch in prime condition. Post a few pics and no doubt somebody will give you a few pointers. :)

    Hi Fend

Would suggest that you get the collection appraised by a reputable stamp dealer in order to check what you have. The good general condition of the collection is an optimistic sign as it suggests it's not a schoolboy collection and condition is a vital component in determining the value of any stamp collection.

If you go to the website of the Irish Philatelic Traders' Association, you'll find a list of stamp dealers in Ireland. There's one registered dealer in Galway and another near Castlebar which, if I'm not mistaken, are near to you. Most dealers are happy to look at collections if you contact them beforehand.

I'd always recommend getting a few opinions before deciding how to dispose of it. Would be great to hear how you get on.

Is there any odd shaped stamps in your collection?

Have the same problem, we have a book of old stamps and not sure what to do with them, have looked at the list but there are no dealers by the looks of it in Tipperary but might contact a few others to see.

Not sure if they are worth much, if anything. They are in a stamp book, and so stuck on to the book so they are not on their own in plastic bags or anything so not sure if that has ruined the value?

Any chance of some pics? If they are valuable, and provided they are carefully stuck in with stamp hinges they be worth something.
