A question about Saorview in Drogheda

I'm going to ditch Sky shortly and get in Saorview. Their coverage map tell me that I need to point the aerial due South to the Kippure transmitter. The Three Rock transmitter, however, is a little closer as the crow flies, and the Clermont Carn transmitter to the North near the border seems to be even closer again to where I am.

Just wondering what is the right choice?

    Many thanks.

    Clermont Cairn

    With a vertically polarised Aerial.

    Have a look here.http://www.tvtrade.ie/digital-tv-aerial-selection-guide.html

The 'right choice' will only be apparent at your particular location; whichever transmitter gives the best result.

The same aerial will work for any of the 3 you mentioned. Clermont Carn will only achieve full coverage in October, when analogue is switched off. Three Rock & Kippure use the same UHF channel, so you won't know which or how much of each you're picking up anyway.

Going on the directional characteristics of Kippure, I expect Three Rock will actually contribute more to signal for Drogheda. Certainly if it uses the existing restrictions analogue UHF from Kippure uses. I've found much variability in the performance of Three Rock/Kippure in Drogheda from one place to the next, perhaps reflecting the co-channel nature of the broadcasts.

To put it simply; I wouldn't use just the saorview coverage site, the line of sight from the aerial is crucial. If there are fewer buildings in the way or hillsides etc of Kippure or Clermont from where you are, go with that direction.

As other posters have mentioned, it depends on what part of Drogheda you are in and whether there are any large buildings closeby or hills between your location and the various transmitter stations. It also depends on where you can physically locate the receive antenna. I'm on the Bryanstown Cross Route and have a small vertically polarised antenna in the attic picking up Saorview from Clermont Carn. Try Kippure and see how it works out but keep in mind when you are putting the antenna up that you may have to swing it around and change its polarisation for Clermont. If you want to send a pm with your location, i may be able to offer a view. I'm not in the trade, just a weary daily commuter!

I reckon RTE will have to bite the bullet and put the Saorview transmitter on the hospital that they planned long ago. Drogheda is down in a hole.
