Just saw this over in the Rugby Forum and most if not all of it would apply to here too.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056565748
As most people are aware during the week Sean Sherlock but into place some new legislation in relation to copyright infringement.

This new legislation has forced us to make some changes to what can and can not be posted. As some material which may have been fine before could now lead to boards being more open to legal proceedings.

    So what's changed

    News Articles

It will no longer be possible to re-publish full articles from other sites or news papers. If people want to reference the full article they will have to link to it. The only exception to this is if the author has given their expressed permission for it to be republished.

Users can quote up to one paragraph of an article however if you do this you must provide a link back to the article.

    You Tube

Only copyright holder officially uploaded videos should be embedded. As a lot of highlights and snippets of games will fall foul of this law, they should not be embedded.

    Match Streams

This has always been a grey area and unfortunately now it has gotten to the point where we will no longer allow the linking of streams.

In match threads people can link to sites that have the official rights to broadcast the match on-line, however if there are any geo location restrictions there is to be no mention of ways to bypass this.

    Photos

Again unless you have the copyright holders permission to reproduce the image you will have to link to it instead.

    Anything else

The above are the main areas effected however anything that is copy righted is covered and should be reproduced here

It is with great regret that we have to take these steps however due to Sean Sherlock we have no option.

If you would like to voice your opinion about the legislation with Sean Sherlock all his contact details can be found at http://www.labour.ie/seansherlock

    F**k off Sean Sherlock.

Surely youtube would be liable for the content hosted on its website. Same goes for match streams

It seems that interpretations of the SOPA laws varies from forum to forum on this website, some allow youtube videos and others are not etc.

Also, under the new SOPA laws, That Guy is now liable for infringing on justsomebloke's post. ;)

basically, so long as it's not Boards hosting the content you're grand afaik. This means no giving excerpts from articles, you can only give the link. Youtube and streams should be fine as it's not boards hosting them.

The last part quoted is wrong. Sean Sherlock is an idiot who doesn't care about your opinion, and the opinion of almost 100,000 others who actively showed their opposition to ACTA. The embedding of videos isn't a problem here either, but of course that is the main problem with ACTA, it's wording makes it very ambiguous and it is possible to interpret things in different ways to suit yourself.

Will quoting also become banned on here as a result?

So what's the worst that can happen if we ignore this BS?

apart from the match streams, most users abide by the others anyway with a link and quote to a article or a link to a certain pic..

Worst case scenario is that boards.ie could be shut down.

Hypothetically speaking, of course. I'd say things will be clearer when the guys are back in the office on Monday and the Feedback thread is re-opened.

Looks like the rugby mods lost the run of themselves a little. Dav's announcement came later and is less restrictive so I think the rugby one should be ignored.

I hope that as this develops the boards owners find standing up to the laws and carrying on as normal is practical. There's still a chance that the European courts will come down on the side of common sense.

Also, fúck you Sean Sherlock. Fúck you very much.
