My friend just found out she's pregnant. She and her BF both were made redundant and moved to Canada for a year they have both come back since before Xmas. She has since got PT job 20hrs and week and the BF has gt job not made permanent yet. They both had move back in with their parents as they can't afford to move in together. But now with the pregnancy it's not an ideal situation to be living apart they would love move in together but just can't afford it . Is there anything they can do ??

my friend had the exact same situation 3 months ago
except they never moved to canada
anyway they too never had the money or work to move in together
they both were living of the social welfare and the girlfriend had child support benefit

when the baby is born, they should try save up enough money together and move into an apartment (or where ever they choose to live) pay the first months rent out of their own money and then claim rent allowence
rent allowence normaly doesnt take as long as cliaming job seekers allowence but just to be safe make sure they save up enough money to cover 2 months rent then by then they will get rent allowence which pays basicly most of the rent and youd only have to put aside abit of your money each week to pay it off fully
thats how my mate and his girlfriend are doing it now
if they claim together as a family rent allowence should only take 4-6 weeks to be claimed

    gl :)

Didn't think they'd be entitled to rent allowance as even though they can't afford rent they both have an income

well with the girlfriend working part-time this will go by the time she has her baby
and the fathers job is not made pernament yet
what im saying is tell them to wait til the babys born
and save up for a months rent (i suggest 2 months to be safe) and see what their working with
if the boyfriend is working full time perm then they wont be able to claim rent allowence
but if hes working temporary or part time and the mother is not working at all
then they will definitly be able to claim rent allownce
but right now if they want to move in together before the child is born im sorry to say its near impossible because the way this country is today

me and my girlfriend moved in together last year we lasted 4 months because she got let go at her full time job while i still had mine
now my full time job was able to pay for the rent but we wouldnt have enough money to buy food every week so we were forced to move back home

now if she was pregenant and we were both working full time, and she went on maternity leave then we could of made it work easy
if she had no job and i had full time work and she was pregnant we could of made it work, but wed be living off our feet just barly making deadlines for rent pay and getting food for ourselfs and the baby

really and truely im sorry to say this but the only way your friend and her boyfriend can move in together is if they both have no jobs, and are on the JSA and claim rent allowence as a family when the babys born even with this they will struggle
or if they both have full time jobs ( unlikely with in this country )

i know this aint usefull but this country has gone backwards and youd be surprized how many people actually get pregnant just so they can get rent allowence to have their own place

its becoming a lot stricter now though because the welfare officer will look at if you could afford the rent when you moved in. plus you have to be renting for 6 months. so if you couldnt afford the rent for the first couple of months and someone (parent/friend) helped you - you may not qualify for rent as you couldnt afford it in the first place.
does this make sense to you.

if the couple claim as a family they dont have to be renting 6months
they can claim it straight away

    Unfortunately, this is not true.

The couple will need to be on the LA housing list for the area in which they wish to rent before they will qualify.

Then it will be down to a means test & other criteria!

    Best of luck OP. :)

If she is in employment (including part-time employment) and has sufficient PRSI contributions she can apply for Maternity Benefit when she goes on her Maternity Leave. This is a minimum of 217.80 Euro per week and is not means tested. see here for more details http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/social_welfare_payments_to_families_and_children/maternity_benefit.html

Once she has the child, then they will be eligible for FIS (Family Income Supplement) if the family income is less than 506 Euro/week after tax, prsi. see here for more details http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/social_welfare_payments_to_families_and_children/family_income_supplement.html
FIS is payable at the same time as Maternity Benefit.

Once Maternity Benefit has finished, the OP may be eligible for a reduced Jobseekers payment depending on how many days she is working. If she is working more than 3 days she won't be eligible though. If the OP has been on a Jobseekers payment already for 15 months, then she could apply for Part-time Job Incentive if she's working less than 24 hours. Again, this is payable along with FIS if you meet the criteria of both schemes.

Rent Supplement is not available for a couple if either of them is working full-time. It is irrelevant if the job is permanent or temporary.

The OP would be as well contacting Citizens Information www.citizensinformation.ie or Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed www.inou.ie to see what payments they may be entitled to.
