Hello all, just wondering how often the timing belt on an 07 audi a3 need to be changed. There's 73,000km/45,000m on the clock. The reason i ask is because its a little chuggy when im stopped and out of gear and im wondering if that could be something to do with it.

Also, any ideas of around how much this should cost and if its worth paying a little extra to go through a proper audi garage?

Any advice appreciated because im clueless when it comes to this stuff.

    Cheers

    What engine is it?

    I'll assume it's either a 1.6 or 1.9TDI?

If its the 1.9, then Audi recommend every 80,000 miles. They don't however list an interval for the 1.6 petrol. But I'd be doing it at 60,000 or after 5 years as that is normally the VW/Audi interval.

Any respectable independent garage should be able to do the job for you and save you a few quid over a dealer. Just make sure that they change the whole kit (water pump, tensioner and guide pulley) and not just the belt itself!

More likely to be a separate issue from the timing being of on the engine. If its the 1.8 petrol turbo, or 1.6 petrol cold be some aspect of the ignition causing your idle "chugging" sympton. If its the 1.9 TDi then again it could be a variety of things. A competent mechanic with access to good diagnostic equipment would be your first point of call, and not necessarily in the main dealer network either.

    Guys,

    A slight high-jack -

But I've a A3 2.0 TDI Sport with 65k miles - Just got a quote for Timing Belt & Water Pump kits to be installed at a cost of €350 Inc Vat

Am I missing something or is this to good to be true??

*I did get a txt for the guy saying that they have a 25% offer on this til the end pf the month.*

That is cheap for a 2.0TDI but not exactly in the "too good to be true" category. Just to give you a comparison we charge €390 for the 2.0TDI vs €350 for the 1.9TDI. The 2.0TDI kit is more expensive and the labour time is slightly longer compared to the 1.9TDI hence the difference in the total cost of the job.

Thanks GD, thats kinda the reply I was looking for - sounds a decent price so, im going call my regular garage guy see if he can match it - as this place does not seem to be a dedicated garage (less equipment & more tyres) maybe thats why I'm slightly suspicious...
