Cork-Waterford public transport options

I am going to need to do a weekly day return trip from Cork to Waterford in the not too distant future.

I assume the bus is the only option really. Looking at the timetable it appears to take 2.5 hours each way. I assume there are stops enroute in Midleton Youghal and Dungarvan which slows it down.

Has anyone here done this journey and is the timetable accurate?

The only faster option seems to be a taxi/hackney which would be expensive.

Bus Eireann Route 40 is the only direct service - timetable is here. Journey time is 2 hours 15 minutes.

Adult day return bought online (saving 5%) is EUR 26.12.

The train is another alternative but takes 3 hours via Limerick Junction. Timetable is here.

Day return by train Cork (Kent) to Waterford Plunkett is €24.50.

    Change at Limerick Junction.

The Cork - Limerick Junction train has catering and laptop power sockets. The Limerick Jct to Waterford train has basic facilities i.e. tables, toilet.

Taxis are readily available from Waterford station. The city centre is a ten minute walk across the bridge.

It's been my experience that the route 40 coach timetable as set out on paper can be very difficult to keep to on the road and (again my view) the running time is not sufficient. This is no reflection on drivers. A Cork to Waterford service I used recently was around 20 minutes late into Waterford. Going the other way it lost around ten to fifteen minutes en route.

There are a handful of non-stop services from either side, not sure what days or how frequently. But they seem to be scheduled because the buses say either "Cork Non-Stop" or "Waterford Non-Stop" on them.

This is what gets me about the whole "competition" thing - Aircoach, BE and Gobus cut their throats and IE on Dublin-Cork/Limerick/Galway but BE have basically free range on a route like this.

Well none of those operators (it would appear) have applied for a licence to do so.

BE operate an hourly service right through the day on the route - I'm not sure what more could be offered?

As for non-stop services - these only operate where there is sufficient demand for two coaches - one non-stop and one stopping.

You would be better off house sharing(rent a room) and go home the weekends. It would probably work out the same if not cheaper as travel.

Id be fcuked if I was commuting for 5 hours everyday. You would be exhausted.

By the way in a car you would do Cork - Waterford in 1.5hrs.
