    Hi folks,

If anyone might be around Galway next week, Gerry Kavanagh will giving a talk about DIY Home Automation with Open Source Software in 091 Labs, Galway's Hackerspace.

If you’ve ever wondered how to control, monitor and fine-tune the processes in your house, then I can’t recommend this talk to you enough!
    • Learn how to control your home via your PC – Interface Linux with X10 Home Automation Controllers
    • Learn about the various types of controller that are available (Lighting, Heating, Sensors etc)
    • Interacting with the control system – Web GUIs, CLIs and Mobile Interfaces (SMS)
    • See a real-world example (Custom written heating control system using Text Messaging)
    • Get the source to the above tool!
The talk will be held on Tuesday, March 6th at 7pm. There’ll be a charge of €5 for non-members with all proceeds going towards the continued running of the Labs.

X10!!!.....does anyone actually use that anymore? I thought X10 products were no longer being supported since November 2011. I read the X10 chip maker ceased trading late last year.

I would be going down the KNX route, using Boss Openremote. KNX products have come down in price big time.

091labs site looks interesting, shame is to far away to attend some of the organised events.

    Hi Mylow,

Can't answer you myself about X10 so I'm going to forward it on to the guy who gave the talk, he might send you an answer =)

If 091 Labs is too far away and you are still living in Drogheda, they are just starting a hackerspace there atm -- http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=77570577

Also, there is the long-established TOG in the center of Dublin! -- http://www.tog.ie/

    Cheers,

    Hi Mylow,

    Sorry just spotted this now.
Yes there is now a maker/hackerspace group starting in Drogheda we have had a few workshops in Millmount and try to meet up every few weeks. Goal is eventually to have a space of our own but right now we're happy enough holding tech meetups, working on small projects (e.g Arduino, Rasp Pi etc) and bringing different interests together. If you are interested in getting involved or wish to know more our website is:
