Canine First Aid Course

Had a terrfying experience a few weeks ago when my little guy choked on a bone thrown into my garden by my scumbag neighbours. I hadn't a clue what to do but thankfully the OH was quick acting and managed to dislodge the bone from his throat, but still it really scared me.

By chance I came across this course online and was wondering does anyone have any experience with it? It sounds like it covers a lot, bit expensive but if it teaches me how to help my boy if the same should happen again it'd be worth it

I'm not familiar with that one so can't comment on it but I've heard good things about the canine first responder course, I think next week on animal A&E there's going to be some info. on it. If you have a chance to do it go for it, I really have to get round to doing it as well.

I did the DTI which looks the same as the one in the link. I found it really good - some of it was common sense but I learnt loads of stuff I didn't know. I hope I never have to use it but at the same time it's good to know what to do. The other week one of the dogs in thd park started choking on a ball - I was all ready to step in but he was able to cough it up himself thank god and was ok.

It's really important, if you're going to do a CFR course, that it's a "hands on" course. There are some courses which are exclusively online, which simply don't teach the proper practical skills, because they can't! There are a couple of good courses available in Dublin, and another in Ennis in Co. Clare.

So true ! It is a completely different situation in real life especially as the adrenaline kicks in. When I was training for wildlife rescue it was virtually all hands on. At least pets are easier in that they are used to being handled.

A while ago I had to put my hand under a car to retrieve an uninjured but upset JR - he had missed being squashed by inches. I had obviously lost my touch as he tagged me before my hand tightened on his scruff. To add insult to injury he must of caught a blood vessel as there was blood running down my arm & dripping off my elbow. The guards stopped & assumed that there had been a fight & the owner was cautious in approaching me :D

Would you have a link to that course? I tried googling but couldn't find info on it

I looked at DTI and it sounds just like the one I was originally looking at. Around the same price too but they sound a lot more official so I think i'd favour them :)
