06 Diesel Corolla gearbox problem incoming

I have a 2006 1.4.d4d corolla h/b, with 210000 km, well kept and serviced like clockwork. In the last few days, I have noticed that getting into third gear on the downshift is either hard or not happening. Typically, I notice it approaching roundabouts when I'm forced to go into second from fourth or fifth. I am wondering if this is the start of some serious gearbox problem that is about to start costing me money. I'v been holding off buying a new car, but if this is a potential problem I'd rather just go ahead and trade her in now.. Any thoughts?

Might be the clutch. The pressure plate is known to be weak in that engine. I replaced my clutch last year as it was getting hard to change gear but no slippage. Mechanic said there was a reasonable amount left on the clutch plates but the pressure plate fingers were all bent slightly.
New clutch and pressure plate in now and it shifts fine.

How much did that set you back?

if the clutch is anything like the older Corolla, they are a PITA to change out.

Toyota quoted me 700 euro for clutch, pressure plate, thrust bearing, slave cylinder and labour.

I got a friend to do it for 400 euro.

Thanks for the replies all. Took the plunge anyway and ordered a new i40. Ironically the only thing not covered under the 5 yr warranty is the clutch. :-)
