What to do with an off-centre fireplace?

    Hi all,

    I'm posting this for an aunt of mine who is trying to refurb her living room as economically as possible (hence me looking for free advice!). She has a real fire with no 'fireplace' apart from a narrow brass edge. The problem is that the fire isn't even close to the centre of the wall. I suggested something tall and narrow to the right and then put a fireplace around the fire and just centre anything else (large mirror, etc.) above that. I think a mantlepiece might look odd and draw attention to the left-of-centredness but again, it might be OK if that space to the right is filled in beneath it.

    In short (ish), wondering if anyone has come across a similar problem and how they remedied it?

    Build a studded partition out enough to even both sides up.
