Apply for a replacement vehicle licence certificate (logbook).

I asked the garda about 8 week's after i bought the car and they told me the car was not in my name but it was not reported stolen and if i did not get the log book i could get some form's to get it in to my name.

Just not sure what form's i need to get so a replacment would not be much good if it's not in my name yet.

Did you buy it from a garage or private?

Have you contacted the person you bought it from at any stage about the VRC?

There is a process for you to get the car into your name. It requires that you get a garage to certify that the car is what you say it is and then you may also have to make a declaration yourself also.
Did you see the logbook when buyng?

I think you sign the RF134 with a gaurd to witness it and return to shannon with appropiate fee.

Had this problem a year ago. No a mechanic will not do. If there is no way of getting the log book from the previous owner and he didn't answer my calls and I did not have his address then as the previous poster said you will have to get the form from the tax office. You will then have have that form completed by a "Main Dealer" and stamped to say that the car is what you say it is , he checks the chassis nbr matches the registration. Form will then have to be signed by a Peace commissioner or someone like that , when all this is done post it and you will get replacement book in a few weeks.
Long winded process but that is the only way. So the sooner you get started the better ;)

No use here as he has not lost the document.

I have the same problem, had to ring revenue to get an Affidavit sent to me. It has to be signed and stamped by a main garage (any will do, not independent I believe though) then a Peace Commissioner / Commissioner of Oaths etc.

In my case the car is 2years out of tax, so imagine the problem that presents when the nearest main dealer is 30km away and you cannot legally drive there.... :(

Ah go there early in the morning , have the documents with you and if you are caught then show them to the guard and explain the situation. That is what I would do but then if you don't want to take the chance , put it on a transporter :D Messy procedure I do agree but had to go through this myself. Made me very wary of buying privately, there's a hell of a lot of cowboys out there :p

I just went trough all this process when I bought a car from "respectable scumbag family" in Newcastle West that never bothered to send a logbook to Shannon.
Basically none of the previous mentioned forms will do. First you need to get in touch with Dept. of Transport which isn't simple task due to their automatized phone answering system, tell your problem and they will send you a form called STATUTORY DECLARATION. Then you need to fill all the required information and do 2 steps - a) you have to visit authorized dealer of whtever car brand your car is who will verify VIN number. b) get it signed and stamped by solicitor or piece commissioner or Commissioner for Oaths.
Dealer may or may not charge you. Frank Keane BMW which I used didn't charge me at all. Solicitor charged fixed fee of €10 but afaik Commissioner for Oaths isn't allowed to charge anything for this.
Then send it to Shannon. They will then send a letter to previous owner which have then 2 weeks to respond or not to. After two weeks of waiting time Shannon will issue logbook on your name.
I have a copy of the required form available to save your time of getting in touch with Shannon. PM me if you need it.
