How do airlocks happen? Within a heating system

Im an entire novice but I would really appreciate some knowledge or even where Id go to learn about such things.

My heating is basically causing me constant problems, air locking a lot. I understand that when you run out of oil airlocks can happen. Is there any other way?

And where does the airlocking happen? You have oil tank, boiler, central heating system. If there is oil in a tank and say for example the boiler doesnt fire but you have heating on in the house, can this cause an airlock?

If just one radiator doesnt work in the house, can this effect it?

I really would appreciate any knowledge you guys would have or anywhere I could find some.

ok are you asking about your oil boiler keeps airlocking and not firing up, or are you telling me that your boiler works fine but your rads need to be bleed all the time from airlocking!:D

when u run out of oil the air lock u may get is in the oil line feeding the burner and is totally different to air locks in your heating system. the airlock in the oil line will stop the boiler from firing as no oil getting to burner and is usually easily sorted out with a couple of spanners or by raising up one end of oil tank a little, temporarily if it does not put strain on pipe.your wet heating system getting airlocked can be due to any number of things.if it has been drained partially or fully and refilled, there may be "high points" in the pipework that create airlocks,a leak in the system can also be a cause of having to bleed rads of air regularly because as water leaves a sealed system u are left with air.there are loads more reasons, every system is unique, google would be a good starting point to learn more or evening classes in diy, plumbing etc. depending on what u are after
