    hi there,
I'm wondering how much should we get of rent supplement. I'm on back to education allowance, my boyfriend is on job seeker benefit. We pay in Dublin 700Euro for our apartment, this is the maximum limit. From what I read on social welfare website we should get weekly amount minus 30 euro pp ( together minus 60) , so it should be something about 115. We got only 61 euro for both of us and in my opinion is to less, but the officer said that this is right...

Is anybody there who could help me with the calculation?
    thanks in advance..

Do you both receive the full rate (€188) per week on your primary payments? If so, then the amount of Rent Supplement you are receiving is correct. Usually, they will take the money away from one of the primary payments and the rent allowance is at the full rate stated (eg €700pm less the €30). It sounds like in your case, the reduced rate in being applied to the rent allowance instead.

yes, I receive 188 as a student on BTEA and my boyfriend receives 188 as an unemployed person. All the posts I'm reading now imply that the rent supplement is something about 70% euro per week. 61 euro is not even 50%, we pay per week 175...

Actually it's minus 35 for a couple not minus 30x2.

Also your weekly rent is 161 euro, less your 35 euro. When I calculate s you should get 126 euro (63 each) I'd certainly appeal it, unless they calculate couples differently.

Daltonmd can I ask you how did you calculate it? I mean 161??? I've tried to calculate with the social welfare website but all these steps in there are very unclear..

I calculate the rent allowance amount as what you are receiving.

If your are on BTEA and your partner on JSB, your income is be 188+188 = 376.

The SWA rate for a couple with no children is 310.80.

The amount of Rent Supplement is calculated to generally ensure that your income, after paying rent, does not fall below a minimum level. This level is the basic Supplementary Welfare Allowance rate for your circumstances (€186 for a single person and €310.80 for a couple) minus €30 (or €35 for a couple). You must always pay at least €30 towards your rent.

    How to calculate rent supplement:
Step 1 is to find your weekly household income.
Steps 2 and 3 are to find out your weekly assessable income. Only a certain amount of your total weekly household income is taken into account. Your assessable income is the amount of household income which is taken into account when calculating your Rent Supplement.
Step 4 is to find your total weekly contribution to rent by adding your assessable income and the minimum Household Contribution.
Step 5 is to find your Rent Supplement by subtracting your total weekly contribution towards your rent from your weekly rent.

    So in your case:
    1. Your weekly household income is €376.
    2/3. Your assessable income is €376 - €310.80 = €65.20
    4. Your household contribution is €35 + €65.20 = €100.20
    5. Your weekly rent is €161.54 minus your contribution of €100.20
Therefore your rent allowance payment is €61.34.
