    Hi all,

    I have a 00 1.6 petrol golf.

I just got quoted €590 for
    - both front discs + pads(€180)
    - both back discs + pads(€185)
    - 3 new tyres (€ 75 each)
    it include labour.

    is this a good/bad/alright quote

    would appreciate any advice.

Work is scheduled for tomorrow so if im getting ripped off i'd rather tell them no sooner

    thanks all

You'd be mad to spend that kind of money on a car thats 12 years old. I presume this is a main dealer quote?

Assume including labour, its not bad.

Why? What has its age to do with anything?

It being roadworthy could be priceless to its owner if they can't afford to spend thousands replacing it

its including labour. and no it's not a main dealer.

    Few things to check -
Unless you are on large rims, 75 euro should buy reasonable tyres. Check what brand they are actually selling. If no brand mentioned, you will most likely get dangerous crap and be ripped off.
Re the brakes, Are you absolutely sure that it needs discs and pads front and back. Im not for one minute saying to skimp on brakes however, its worth checking that you are not replacing them needlessly at the same time.

@ mickdw. TBH the metal grinding sound is indication enough to me. i've had the car 3 years and i've not change pads/discs in that time so i would think there due a change.

standard 16 or 17" rims not 100% but there not big one defo.

i just priced a pads+disc sets for front + rear for 150. assuming labour around 120-150.
doesnt seem too much of a rip off in the end.

just the price of type, its madness

Why? If €600 keeps the car on the road for another year or 18 months I don't think its mad to spend it... Of course there's no way of knowing what else might be needed in time....

your pads could just be work down or a problem with one of the handbrake cables, get a second opinion. set of pads front and back and some part worn tyres... will half that bill...

Are the front or rears grinding though. No chance both are grinding surely unless you are a very careless owner. Of course, they may well all be past their wear limit but just cause they are 3 years on the car doesnt mean anything. My father doesnt use a set of pads in 3 years, never mind discs while I use a set of pads every year but at 4 years only now need front discs.
Just trying to make sure you are not throwing money away.

I'd say the only way you'll get the brakes cheaper is by going online and scourcing the parts yourself and then paying someone for labour only. At least if you buy the parts you can get the brand you want rather than taking the chance of the garage fitting the cheapest possible brand they can get.

The quote for the brakes is too much. Prices would be approx as below:

    Front discs about €60
    Front pads €35
    Labour €50

    Rear pads €25
    Rear discs €30
    Labour €50

That comes to a total of approx €280 inc VAT. And I am being generous with the labour and quoting for good quality brake pads. You could get them done cheaper if you really wanted.
