Giant Escape 3 - opinions anyone?

I've been looking for a cheap(ish) bike for a 15km roundtrip commute to work. I had been thinking of a MTB, but a few people advised me to go for a hybrid. My budget is around €300, so I've been looking at the Giant Escape 3.

So, has anyone any opinions on this bike? Can anyone suggest anything better?

    Cheers,
    ToadVine

I have one! I commute on it myself very happily. It's not an amazing bike, putting more money in would get a far better one, but it is definitely good value if that's all you want to put towards it. Strong enough for years of commuting, and comfortable enough. If it was stolen, I'd save up more cash and get a Giant Rapid or maybe just a better Escape, but I in no way regret buying it. I take it for 20-40 km spins every now and then, and it holds up well enough.

I see a good few of them around the city centre as well, so they can't be too bad.

It seems like a sold bike but if it were me I'd get a Giant Rapid they are much lighter and faster. That said, the ride is harder than the Escape though.

    Thanks for the opinions guys.

Not sure if I want to spend the extra cash on the Rapid ... is it really worth the extra money?

    Also, any other suggestions?

I guess it depends how much you use it. I do about 14k each way, on an old MTB. 15km round trip is half that, probably only 15 mins each way. For a journey that short I don't think the extra weight of the escape is a big deal.

They're quite different bikes. My sister has a rapid and my wife has an escape.

The rapid is basically a road bike with flat bars, so faster, lighter, and skinnier tyres. Great for long spins in the country, sportifs, etc...

The escape is a more typical hybrid, more comfortable over rough surfaces, set up to take mudguards, panniers, etc..., wider more puncture resistant tyres, a bit heavier and slower. Still a good little bike in many ways, and quite light for what it is.

I've got a similar budget and am looking at the same bike. Weird timing :p

I originally wanted to buy an Escape 3 but decided to go for a Rapid 3 because I didn't want to change bikes 6 months down the line.
