Weird MS Word issue?

I tried burning a file to a DVD this evening in Nero and everytime it failed due a MS Word document having too long of a file name. I subsequently changed the file name to a shorter version as it was almost as long as all this sentence.

However Nero is still having trouble as there appears to be a sort of ghost of the file and it is recognising a file called "~$ Very long file name.docx" despite I having renamed the document to "short.docx". I haven't word on the actual computer I was trying to burn the file on and I have seen files like this in the past with ~$ in front of the name if word crashed and it is like a recovery file or something.

I have set folder view settings and revealed the hidden files and I can't find this rogue file.

It was some data off an old laptop and I have formatted it and reinstalled Windows onto it and I backed up the data to an external drive before copying it over for burning to blank DVD on the request of the laptop owner who asked me to clean it out and restore it before he gives it to a family member as he has a new laptop himself and he wanted the old data on a DVD. I don't have office on my guinea pig computer as I just use it for lifting out data and mundane tasks and I don't want to look at other peoples data anyway!

Should I try an alternative to Nero?

Make a copy of the file and rename that. Burn

I couldn't get it to work with Nero anyway so I used my laptop which has cyberlink, which gave me the option to rename the file to a shorter name. Even then however it still did not work and there was some pretty large corruption and I was trying to burn the "User" file which contains everything, Photos, Documents etc. as the data was very small at only 3.6GB. It was burning corrupt disks (DVD-RW's are a lifesaver!)

I had to individually strip out all the files out of every folder and and create new folders for them before entering them into a new hold all folder called X's Laptop Data. it eventually worked as they must have been some type of windows system folders. I also deleted the unnecessary app data which was hidden in there as it was just the raw photos, docs that were wanted.

Its not the files fault but where its located.

if you have the file, in a folder, in a folder, in a folder, in a folder... blah blah blah, try putting the file on your desktop and buring from there?

Word will create a temp file in the same directory while you work on it and only commit any changes to the actual file when you click Save.
If you don't shut word down properly the file can be left behind.

To delete it, you'll need to go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View:
    - check "Show hidden files and folders"
    - uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"
The offending file should appear. Delete it.

DVDs have much stricter naming conventions and there's a limit to to the total path name length, not just the filename.
