recording with HDD connected to TV

Am looking at replacing our TV for one of those TVs which can receive both Satellite (FreeSat hopefully) and Saorview (e.g. Samsung D7000) but would also like one which can record to disk - have a couple of questions on the disk recording
I presume I can I schedule a program to record to the disk but does the TV have to be left switched on (and needlessly displaying the picture)?

Whats recommended in terms of USB HDDs for recording? - e.g. is there a minimum speed (seek time), USB2 or USB3 -

any specific USB drives to use/avoid?

I heard with Panasonic connected HDDs, they get formatted & tied to that TV and cannot be read by another TV or PC, is this the same for Samsung?

If you have some media on the HDD, can the TV play it - e.g. divx etc

Is there any common standard here being used?

    Thx
    gok
