There's a nice mac Mini going on the refurb store for EUR 528.

I am considering picking it up and using it as a HTPC with Plex.

Any thoughts? Should I hold off a few months as the range is nearly a year old ?

Well if you hold off for a new one, by the time that one gets to the refurb store, another one will be on its way. Just go for it

I held out and now it's gone. I guess I'll wait and see what happens next week with the Apple TV 3. That said, I dislike Apple's walled garden approach to media so I'll probably end up getting a Mac mini with student discount or building a Windows HTPC.

I've had a mac mini for 4 years the last 3 as a htpc. It worked very nicely but I've recently gotten an apple tv 2 jailbroken it put plex on it and to be honest it's perfect. My two cents are if you have another pc in the house to use as a media server save yourself a few hundred quid and get the apple tv. Although its probably worth waiting till after the apple event next week for the rumoured update.

The main reason I've avoided the Apple TV is it has problems with 1080p. I also like running third party apps like Sickbeard which I can't see Apple every allowing on their devices. I also jailbroke my iphone in the past and I found it a pain in the hole to maintain. I lost my apps and settings more than once because of an IOS update.

That said I like the sound of Plex on the Apple TV.

Just on the update thing, if you jail break an ATV2 theres an option on it which everyone uses, updatebegone, which stops ios checking for updates.
