Transferring Music to HTC Wildfire s

Got this phone recently and have been trying to transfer music from the laptop to the phone. I downloaded the HTC sync thing but every time I connect the phone to the laptop, it says there is no device connected. Tried this with two different computers. Anyone know what the problem might be?
