Adding a second router

    Hi all
I need help and I hope someone here can help me.

At home three teenagers who are on wireless laptops nearly 24 7. We have Eircom broadband supply and along with the wireless it also feeds my desktop via a cable.

I need to be able to cut off the wireless to the teenagers without shutting off the internet to my pc or my wifes iPad. Someone suggested that I got a second router, fed it from one of the lan ports, gave the kids the wireless code for this and changed the Eircom one so that only my wife and I have it. The result of this would be that I could unplug the new router at night while leaving the eircom one on.

As I am as thick as a plank I went out and bought a second hand router, Trendnet TEW-432BRP and tried all that I was told. I have wireless signal but no content.

Its clear I am doing something wrong.......

Any Ideas or help would be great.

You can manually disable the wireless feature in the router settings.

Open up a web browser and type the following in to the address

192.168.1.254 and then press enter. It should load up the configuration page. Go in to Expert Mode and Wireless.

You can also limit this to one device only (the dhcp list).

Wife may not be happy with that, remember, she has an iPad. ;)

You can indeed connect an additional WLAN router to the eircom DSL modem. Then follow the instructions above to enter the eircom routers config menu and change the WLAN password so only your wife has access via the new password. Pull the plug to cut off the offspring at night.

Or buy a router suitable for decent 3rd party firmware (i.e. DD-WRT or Tomato) and set up scheduled restrictions for the MAC addresses of the kids' wireless devices.

Change the wireless key and dont give it to the kids.

    Same situation here...

What i've done is...purchased a router ,enabled 4 SSIDs,each one for dedicated service:
    one for me
second for TV and other stuff ( ie ...wife !?? )
    third for kid1
    forth for kid2

The SSID 3 & 4,kid1 and kid2 can have their own settings, such as ssid name(my.son.name.wifi) ,his own shared key and...time seting for on or off !!
I've setup their ssid network to be ON only let's say from 5pm to 8pm ,mon to fri and a bigger time window during weekend! Works as a dream !
I have a Sonicwall doing the content filtering and security/monitoring...perfect scenarios !

Afaik, most routers have this feature of multiple SSIDs but i use a netgear that has the time option as well !
Eircom's netopia has a time function, but that affects ALL wireless access and connected clients...

    Have fun...
