Have my edge 500 set up and ready for its first use today. Which site would ye recommend me to use in order to view/store/analyse my data?

Which has the more functionality and what are the major differences between the two?

    Thanks.

    Moved from cycling training logs

They both have different features - Strava certainly can make you more competitive, whereas you probably have more analysis availabe on Garmin Connect (although I actually use Garmin Training Centre)

I would suggest uploading to both and see which you prefer over time

Thanks! Sorry I thought I was in the normal forum and not the logs forum when creating the thread.

I use both. Strava's good for comparing yourself to others, and can be useful to spur yourself on while on the road - "must... get... KOM... for... segment!"

It probably does most things Garmin does, but not sure if it will do workouts and courses as well.

I used Strava to the point now where I dont use Garmin connect at all!

I use Strava all the time ... it's so much better than Garmin Connect IMHO.
I still upload to Garmin though just in case Strava ever go bust.
Strava become addictive when you have friends/club mates on there too.

i also use both. The strava thingis good for pushing on and beating (or trying to beat) other boardsies. the garmin seems to go into more detail of your spin.

Garmin has way more data and IMO is far more accurate. Strava is just for competing. No one down here seems to be on strava so it's gotten to the point where I find it fairly useless

Yes, for the love of God, can someone make this stop please....I haven't been able to stop and smell the roses since I signed up on Strava...

Seriously though, as others have said, Garmin is the way to go for post-match analysis, whilst Strava is great for competing/comparison.

I use both Garmin Connect and Strava, for the reasons already mentioned - the former for more detail, the latter for the segments. I also use ridewithgps.com sometimes as it shows gradients (as percentages - not entirely sure how accurate it is though), and I received an e-mail from them today saying that they now do segments too so another reason to explore their service.

I use both Garmin and Strava and have yet to decide which I prefer. I'd probably edge towards Garmin as I'm not as competitive as some on here (ie, useless) but its interesting to see how much the same spin differs on both platforms. I don't know which is more accurate but there are always differences. That said, doing the same route again will show another set of figures that are not 100% accurate with the previous log, so it's all PFM to me

I'm not yet as competitive as some on here
    FYP - it's only a matter of time ...;)

Does garmin allow you see the time spent in each Heart rate zone?
I know you can view average and max.

Interestingly, Ride with GPS are going to introduce segments to their site - I guess that strava is a big threat to their business.

Can anyone tell me if its possible to change "miles" into KM on garmin connect? I notice that the default setting is miles, but I'd like to have it set to show just KM when I upload my activity log to it.

    thanks.

I notice that the calories on connect differ big time as compared to what strava counts?

For instance, on todays 37km cycle, connect says 1700 while its only 660 on strava? That's a big difference, so how do I know which one is more accurate?

Basically there are numerous formulae for calculating energy use where no power meter is being used. The one for the Garmin 500 is apparently a better (licenced) calculation than previous Garmin models, but all calculations are estimates without a power meter.

    Just completed a 20km cycle.

On garmin connect it says the time was 1h 25min http://connect.garmin.com/activity/156239581

whereas on strava it says the time was also 1h 25mins, but moving time was 1h 12min
    http://app.strava.com/rides/4977432

I've the edge set to NOT auto pause, so I thought it also records "moving time" and displays that as well?

I did break in total for about 13 mins during the trip so 1h 12min is accurate but why doesn't garmin connect show the two different times?

Mine does the same. Must be a strava feature to ignore stopped time.

Even with a power meter energy use calculations are an estimate, within 10% or so.

AFAIK the only way you can measure energy use directly is with a mask, breathing tube and gas analyzers. Not very portable.

You mean Garmin connect ignores stopped time?

How come with other cycles on my connect page there is a "time" and "elapsed time" difference? It must recognise moving time sometimes then.

You have me there! I'm on the mobile so don't see everything on garmin or strava. I. Thought they both showed both times (total and moving), will check when I can see the full sites.
