Will Window Boxes ruin slates - is artificial an option

In order to create a country type feel, I have two dormer windows on farmhouse and I was planning on putting window boxes on them. However my husband thinks that they will ruin the slates!

Is this always the case if watering them, that they will turn slates green?

Secondly, is using artifical ones an option as it is only for two windows? If so where would I go about them? Thanks

Watering may cause streaking but so too will the weather? A bit much to expect spoil-free slates on a farmhouse, worse still to consider using synthetic plants?

Synthetic box hedging is very good especially in commercial environments, just ensure you use UV proof grade plastics. What size is the window ope and where are you located?
