Can someone help me? I'm newish to cycling so I'm a bit lost and I gather there have been some changes and difficulties lately.

What I'd like to do is take part in the occasional IVCA race this year. I'm planning to join a cycling club shortly. So, to take part in a few IVCA races do I need to pay the full whack of €160 or so for IVCA membership which includes race fees or is there any way I can just turn up and pay a fee for the odd race I'd like to do?

I've chatted to a couple of people in the club and IVCA and I'm just not getting a clear answer. Sorry if I'm opening up a can of worms, I don't mean to. I'm just already spending a lot of money on sport this year!

You must have racing insurance, and the way you can get that is by having either an IVCA or CI racing licence. If you go for the IVCA option you get access to all their races with no additional cost. If you go for the CI option, you will still have to pay entry fees for either CI Open races, Club races or IVCA races.

CI are now proposing to recognise IVCA licences, so you would be able to enter CI events by payment of the appropriate entry fee.

I tried that last year ..... still waiting .....!

From what I can understand the IVCA doesn't encourage doing "occassional" races which is fair enough but it sort of makes a mockery of any "licence arrangement" with C.I.!

There was no "licence arrangement" last year. The IVCA unilaterally allowed CI licence holders to race IVCA events on payment of a fee on an event by event basis

If you or anybody else doesn't get a reply within what you consider a reasonable time for queries sent to either secretary@ivca.info or admin@ivca.info, pm me a copy of the e-mail and I will follow it up with them.

Re: Occasional races. The IVCA prefers riders to pre sign up before racing in order to allocate them 2 marshalling duties, establish their ability and put them in a suitable group. All IVCA races are handicap and cater for 40 to 80 year olds in six different ability groups, so allowing unknown A1 and strong A2 riders turn up on the day has proved to actually ruin races in the past. In general A1 and competitive A2 riders can win or place in any IVCA race they want and are too strong even for most of the scratch riders in CP races. It is better suited to average A2, + A3,A4 ability.
I don't represent the IVCA in this post but I think the "license arrangement" your refer to might be better described as a mutual recognition of each others insurance. I am not aware of the final outcome of this either, if any, at this time.

Didn't really mean to sound negative - I think the IVCA do a fantastic job!
From a purely selfish standpoint, I race mountainbikes (slowly!) and would find it impossible to commit to the whole IVCA schedule - I would love to be able to turn up, pay an entry fee (a relatively high one would be fair!) and do some of their events!
However I can understand why they might not like this to be an option!

That's OK. You and a few others on here have given me a few ideas that I will propose at the next AGM. For example a half price go lite membership for <20 races with only one marshal duty for people like yourself or those who live more than 100Km from Dublin, unemployed etc.
However last year we were oversubscribed with 250 fully paid members with up to 125 turning out for some CP's and we decided to close the new membership for a few weeks anyway for safety reasons as all our races are run over secondary roads.
