    Hi

Most systems of self defence are about dealing with an attack by using an attack.
Is it better to take some little abuse and move on than harming your self fighting with a maniac.
If a person spends a fortune learning how to defend themselves are they more at risk of being hurt.

    Hmmmm.

Jesus talked about turning the other cheek.

And where did that get him?

You know that;s the strange thing. I've been interested in martial arts for 10 years but I really don't think violence is a solution to almost any problem.

However it really depends on the situation.

Better to do martial arts to gain confidence so that you can fight when you need to. Then you are in a position to do something if need be.

Scenario 1 - Thug in dark alley with knife wanting to rob you.

Solution - Give money and run away. Don't care about your pride.

Scenario 2 - Some muscular guy beating a woman in public.

Solution - Now in this case you might be tempted to intervene. Wouldn't it be great to say to such a guy "Try that on me."

Maybe thats my fantasy of being a knight in shining armour but i can tell you I saw this once and am ashamed to say I stood around and just watched.

Makes me feel like a coward now. :(

Shona Maguire, Judo black belt - BJJ Blue belt and MMA fighter has a great story about a scumbag who attempted to mug/rob her bag at a LUAS stop.

Can't remember exactly, but Shona compete in or around 48kgs - she handed the scumbag his ass back on a plate. If memory serves me correctly he begged her to stop hitting him :)

She just smashed him into the ground or hit him with the world, and then he cried for forgiveness for trying to rob her, she was merciful even though he would not have been if roles reversed, she was about 50kg

If somebody attacks you its to late for the most suitable defence. (avoid) You only need to attack after putting yourself in a safe place.
I have to admit to attack first if you feel endangered is the best policy.
Better judge by 12 than carried by 6.
You D'ont need to spend a fortune, just reseach and find what you need.

I was walking home one night when I saw 4 guys in Celtic jerseys beating the crap out of a guy in a Rangers jersey. The poor guy was on the ground and barely able to put up a fight. I wanted to walk by but in my head I thought "I can't in good conscience walk away from this". So I took a deep breath, ran over, and between the 5 of us we gave him a right good hiding!*

Yes, it's better to walk away. But everyone will have certain lines that they don't allow to be crossed. You have to decide where those lines are. Some guys will go buck-ape if their pint gets knocked over. Some guys will knock people's pints over and not give a f**k. But how much is the pint really worth?

Of course, if it's life or death, then the "judged by 12 rather than carried by 6" is a good approach I think.

    * I have no interest in soccer or the Celtic/Rangers thing.
