where do ya get that figure from
id zero it bang on at 100 or slightly higher

1.5 high at 100. This will give you a zero of about 165. If you zero at 100 you will be flat to 150 yards

100 yards is ideal. If you get plenty of practice over time and get to know how the round performs and are comfortable with taking long shots then move it to 1.5" high at 100yds

Your confused now lad coz thats further wrong! If you zero an inch high at 100 your gonna be zeroed at about 150+.

Shoot as much paper at different ranges as ya can and ya will figure it out quick enough what zero suits you

Obviously, you've lots of rounds put through the HMR. But earlier you said 1.5" inch was zero'd for 165. So it makes sense to me that 1" high is going to be 140ish. Maybe you are both refering to different bullets, 17 vrs 20 grain.

0 at 100issh (no range finder) point and pull out to what i think is 150ish and its dead on. all the ballistic calculators use even figures so if you follow one of them theres no point using strange numbers such as 130

An inch high at 100 leaves it an inch low at 150 and 6 inches low at 200.

First they came for the socialists...

    17g, as I said I'll pull out the rifle this weekend, I won't say you're right/wrong till I do.

Not that my opinion matters or anything! Only for the sake of discussion.

After years of shotguning I've got myself a Hmr & so far I love it. The scope got a knock last night though and I want to know how you guys zero?

I've got paper targets. Should I just pace out 100yrds & go from there.?

Set up one at 50 first incase it took a fair knock and it misses paper at 100.
But then yeah just pace out what you think is 100 and fire a shot. dial in the clicks and then fire again. If you are happy with it, fire a three shot group to be sure you didnt pull it and fluke it.

Also try and remove as much human error as possible by using a bipod and rear bag if you have one. If you dont a hoodie or jacket under the stock rolled up in a ball will work too.

Thanks garv. I do have a bi-pod. The knock probably wasn't t that bad. I shot 2x bunnies at about 30 yards shortly after the knock and I hit exactly where I was aiming at, but I just want to be sure for the longer charlie shots.

If you zero the 17 spot on at 35yrds your good out to 140 head shots rabbits, greys and magpies etc

    You're saying a 35yrd zero is the same as a 140yrd zero???

When you zero your rifle at any distance, the bullet will cross the line of sight at two points, giving you a near zero and a far zero. In the case of the hmr a 35 yard near zero gives.a far zero of 140 yards, same as with the 55gr v-max 223 rounds, a 50yard near zero gives a 200 yard far zero. It's a handy way of setting a rifle for elevation, but you should still check it at the far zero, because the windage may be off slightly.

Forgot to mention that this is also dependant on the distance between the centre of the barrel, and the centre of the scope. A scope height of 2 inches will give a 140 yard far zero using a 35 yard near zero, where a scope height of 1.5 inches will give a 120 yard far zero for a 35 yard near zero

In addition to the above, look at the trajectory graph I posted.
The various zeros from 100 to 200yards also cross the zero line at 17 to 45 yards or so
