considering that maynooth students generate massive revenue for the town, has any student ever ran or considered running in the local elections around maynooth? i don't think its fair that local gombeen politicians decide what is in our best interests. seems like they're getting a free roide without any real opposition.

Problem is that the most students excluding the non-local ones would be unable to vote in the local election. Also a counciliors term is either 4 or 5 year so for most students they would be finished their courses by the time they ran so would no longer be a student rep.
Most local residents would also be unlikely to vote for a student unless they were local aswell imo.

I'm pretty sure the SU President is entitled to the seat on the Community Council. I know Aengus took it up when he was Pres, but not sure if the tradition still exists, or if Rob is involved.

I think KKSaints is right, there's less of a chance of the general populace of Maynooth voting for a student, and I would imagine only a small amount of students are eligible to vote in the local elections.

Still it's an interesting point, it might improve student/local relations if there was an independently elected rep (ie not the president).

i agree. there should be some system in place where those who are elected in the student elections automatically take a seat in the locals.
