You could probably get something wider like an 18-55, which with your other lens will take you all the way from 18-200. 18-55s are cheap and well within your budget. One here with vibration reduction for €115.95 delivered. If you later upgrade from the D40 you should still be able to use your lenses, provided, of course, you stay Nikon.

I second that. Anything that goes wider such as the DX10-24 or DX12-24 would be outside your budget, even second hand. You might pick up a 10.5mm second within your price but it distorts a lot and you would need to correct it in Photoshop or equivalent to get a suitable usable picture. This would reduce the focal length to the equivalent of about 12mm, still very wide.
I think the 18-55 would be more useful to you at the moment considering that your only other lens is the 55-200. It would be a good complimenting pair.

I have a Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 that I really like, but buying one would kill your budget.

Has that got vibration reduction? If so, and you add the suggestion from leche solara, you won't go wrong - and you won't have spent anywhere near your €400 limit.

If it hasn't, and you go exploring on the site in leche solara's link, you'll see a 55-200mm with VR for €160, and a 55-300mm with VR for €260. One way or the other, you won't be busting the budget.
