Unless you're quite a bit over 30, why not check out playing at J4 level as well? You get a big mixture of players at that level; including beginners.

Or even J5. There are about 10 or so J5 teams in Dublin.

In Ulster teams like that are usually over 35s, it sounds like it's similar in Dublin/Leinster too. Most clubs in Ireland will have a team to suit all standards though, and in my experience clubs will only be too glad to add more players to their roster no matter what level.

    Good luck and enjoy.

I wouldn't go playing Vets' rugby if you're a novice. Much better to take Eoin and WeeBushy's advice to play J4 or J5 where you can learn the game.

Dublin clubs playing J5 include Stillorgan (my club), Terenure, Mary's, Blackrock, Bective, Clontarf, Emerald Warriors (based in Sutton), Clondalkin and De La Salle Palmerstown. I'm not certain, but I think Mary's dropped out of J5 during the season.

De La Salle Palmerstown play in Stepaside! Clondalkin is definitely your best bet if you're nearby. Sound bunch of lads too.

Only thing to bear in mind is that the current season is coming to an end. We only have 1 league game left, and I'd imagine most teams are similar, and then there's the cup so potentially only 2 games left for most teams. You could wait until next season and start from the beginning of the season, or if you're keen to get going you could start now. We've had a couple of new lads down in the last few weeks, but it is tough coming into an established team at the culmination of a season, you mightn't see game time until next season anyway.

I'm sure you'll be welcomed wherever you decide to go, but just to keep the above in mind. G'luck and enjoy :)

I'd look at J5 Rugby, close to you try Clondalkin, there club is at CityWest as oppose to Clondalkin. Having said that equivalent Rugby outside the pale is easier again, a lot slower. Some J4 Rugby, the standard can be high as J2 country rugby IMO. Over 35's, there is some senior club league and the Fox Cup and to be honest, it's some of the more physical Rugby I have played with some huge former senior players, not really the place for someone starting out. Some might disagree though.. Best of luck, its a great game.. (for a young lad.... hah.. ;))

BTW, Clondalkin specifically integrate vet players with new starters into their J5 side, at least they used to. S, you would be training with other lads that are new to the game. A very well run, grounded club with some great people, and at J5 everyone gets a game at the expense of league position.

Haven't played Clondalkin many times, but in the few I have I would have nothing but positive things to say about them as a club. They come across as a decent bunch. They'd be a good choice.

Watch as many games you can in the mean time, if you have an idea of what position you'd like to play it might be an idea to follow whoever is playing in that position and try and get a handle of what you're supposed to do. Post away on this forum as well, lots of people who would be happy to help with your understanding of the game.

There's also a very good thread (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055611380) set up by a guy who sarted playing for he first time that has morphed into general 'I'm new to rugby thread'. It's well worth a read as well.

Parkmore would be an option for you. We play in the J4 league and train in Terenure. The average age of the team is early thirties, there are a few who only started playing rugby post 30 and a fair number of GAA converts.

Like WeeBushy indicated, the league has just come to an end this weekend so things will be getting quiet soon.

    Its another option to consider...
