What area are you looking to get into? Fund accounting is my guess. I see in Limerick they are looking for people through the Jobsbridge scheme. Can't comment on them as I don't know much about them but would be interested to hear peoples thoughts.

Well I'm currently getting ready to sit Fund Accounting along with Legal and Custody exams in 2 weeks time through the Institute of Bankers. If you check the accounting threads you will probably get a better idea of what is in store for you in Fund Accounting. It's not an area I am looking to get into personally but just had to take it as part of the course I wanted to do. This course is now being run in Limerick and Cork also, I attended class in Citi in Dublin and there would have been roughly 150-180 in the lecture hall.

I think if you get into an organisation it is important to get one that will invest in your development. Lot of courses available through bankers.ie and just need to find the area that best suits you. Some of the bigger companies actually run these courses internally.

You hear a lot of varying reports about different places, as they say it's hard to keep everyone happy, so best thing is to give it a go and find out yourself if you like it.

Yeah, i might just do, worth a try anyway, are the Fund Accounting exams hard?

Well I won't really know until after I do exam but it mainly boils down to 1st question which is worth 50 marks and takes approx 90mins to complete. You need to do all DR/CR entries for transactions over a few days, then a trial balance and finally cut the NAV. If you are working in that area I imagine it is something you would do blindfolded.

Course material is pretty thorough and lectures spend good bit of time preparing you. You need over 50% to pass, so if you nail Q.1, I guess you are as good as home and hosed.

Worked there in the past - it's alright but very political as the senior staff tend to look after their own - they are also ruthless when they want to be - i.e. hiring and firing as they choose but all companies are the same.

Go for it -get some experience and see how you like it - good to have a job in these days!

I know this is a dead enough thread but I have an interview with Northern Trust tomorrow for a compulsory 6 month work placement.

The role is Transfer Agency Analyst.

I'm surprised that they accept Marketing students (only person out of my class to get interview) alongside Business students for this role but there you go. .

Any tips for what I could do to bring a Marketing side of things into the interview to set myself aside?

I was slightly worried that they'd only want Business/Finance students but if they saw my CV and asked me to do an interview there must be something they like.

Just from the job specs alone I'm trying not to get worried that it's going to be totally irrelevant to my course:
    Major Duties
    • Deliver high quality service to customers by accurate, timely completion of all assigned tasks (which may be parts of larger processes) and requests for information.
    • Perform tasks under supervision of defined processes or procedures and check for errors. Ensure procedures in relation to above tasks are adhered to.
    • Collect, enter and extract data and undertake analysis as directed. Assist in the preparation of client reports as requested. Resolve queries.
    • Liaise with other units – Fund Accounting, Trustee, Corporate Actions, Control, Custody, Accounts and Fund Managers. Seek to learn quickly and continually improve service offered.
    • Assist other colleagues as appropriate. Act as effective team member within the unit and with other units by imparting knowledge as appropriate.
    • Other duties specific to the role allocated

If anyone else has done work placement here before advice would be appreciated too!

    David

Don't know much about working in NTH Trust as a company but that is a standard operational financial job. I know many in banking who have no financial background or studies and got that type of position

If you perform well, wouldn't be surprised to see them offer a perm position. The job might be a bit tough and ****ty but crucially you should get your foot in the door and if you do well then it opens up other departments - plus if you manage to do 3 years in the company, then you'll be pretty much able to apply for any standard financial job, and there's quite a scope - settlement, income, corp actions, etc back offices - and with more experience, middle office - risk, compliance, treasury and so on

Not to mention there's a large amount of similar jobs available all around the world (am currently working in another country without the local language)

If you haven't got past the interview, pm me, there's a knack to it

Ended up successful in the interview anyway, so I'll be starting in June! :)

Thanks for your reply. Interesting to hear some of that!

Sorry for bringing up an old thread, have seen a few finance vacancies here and have been thinking of applying. What are working hours and conditions like? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

    Hiya,

Just from my experience anyway, I've been here a month now for college work placement and it's very good.

I'm working 09:00-17:15, but some of my department do have to stay after that and sometimes well after, depending on how fast/slow other departments and firms are in other countries. Dealing with foreign exchanges/trades globally, the time differences can play a factor in the hours you work.

Depending on what department you are working in the hours differ so it's hard to say.

Conditions in the workplace are very good in fairness. The floor I'm on is fairly quiet. There is a main canteen on 1 floor and there are kitchens on every floor.

I would recommend it alright if you are in to finance. Do well here and you're set for life with work I'd imagine.

If you want any info about different departments or any other questions feel free to ask.

Thanks for your reply. Is it a busy environment? Would there be much chat? What is the dress code? Is there much overtime?

Hiya, it's getting busier as I write this. There are many people in training at the moment, so I'd be expecting it to be hectic enough come the end of July. In saying that though it is peaceful here and is never really "loud" per se. There is chat alright, so it isn't like it's dead quiet..but like any office environment there are lulls during the day when you can sense people are tired.

Dress code for the summer months is casual (most people wear a shirt/jeans/shoes/trainers). Outside of the summer it's shirt/dress pants/shoes. No need for a tie.

Yep there seems to be a lot of overtime around since there's varying currencies etc they often need people to stay extra hours. Working Irish public holidays is voluntary of course. Since it is an American Company things like Thanksgiving/4th of July etc are days off.

Do the company pay overtime for salary staff? What kind of starting salary should one expect? Thinking of applying but am unsure?

Sorry, I only saw this now.

Ya, there is overtime when you ARE ASKED to work extra hours/weekends/bank holidays etc but some people often have to stay after finishing hours where they don't get overtime paid.

I worked the recent August bank holiday and for that I got double pay and an extra day-in-lieu which is pretty nice.

It's very seldom anyone in my department works weekends unless they are dealing with accounts from the Middle East where Sunday is just a normal day for them. It'll never be mandatory to work weekends though and you'd never be forced.

The Managers are very good in my department in accommodating people for days off/bank holidays/Christmas hours too in fairness to them. (I can't speak for other departments).

I can't comment 100% on starting salary since mine is a bit different (college work placement) but whatever it is, it includes VHI for the year which is pretty nice. Starting salaries obviously vary on department and experience too of course. As some have said above too, a good year of experience here will give you a v. high chance of internal promotions and it is one of the best companies to have on your CV. You are set for life with work if you put in a good time here one would imagine. It is a highly respected company.

There's offices in Chicago/London/Manilla/Tempé/Singapore/Bangalore too which gives a nice chance to move to work elsewhere.

Feel free to pm me if you'd like more info
