Not sure if this is the right forum.......

Does anyone have any experience with nmap?

In short I just want to see what type of traffic is slowing down my network.

I have ran a scan which shows ports opened on each host. Is it possible to tell with nmap which host is using all the bandwidth and what type of traffic i.e torrents, streaming films etc

Or if anybody has any alternative software to use for this?

    Thanks

I'm not sure nmap will do what you want and it will tell you what ports are open but not what data is passing. One tool that is very useful for looking at the actual data is Wireshark [FOSS of course!], but I think it would be a very laborious task to do what you want using it.

In that respect you might find this useful

I've downloaded but never really used it but
    http://bandwidthd.sourceforge.net/
Looks like it might be something that you want

Good luck and do let us know (for future reference) what you found worked best!
